인공와우(CI, Cochlear Implant)는 보청기(HA, Hearing Aid)로 재활이 어려운 양측 고심도 감각신경성 난청인들에게 청각정보를 제공해줄 수 있는 방법으로, 송화기에 유입된 음원을 전기에너지로 변환하여 와우 내에 삽입된 전극 통하여 전기자극을 주어 소리 정보를 제공한다. 2005년부터 실시된 한국 정부의 보험급여 확대로 와우 이식의 경제적 부담을 덜게 되어 보다 많은 고심도 난청인이 혜택을 받을 수 있게 되었다. 최근 CI 대상가능 후보가 점차 확대되어 다양한 연령, 다양한 원인에 의한 난청으로 적용 범위가 넓어졌다. -
