Isolation of cholesterol-lowering lactic acid bacteria from human intestine for probiotic use
Hyeong-Jun Lim, So-Young Kim, Wan-Kyu Lee 대한수의학회 Journal of Veterinary Science 5 Pages
16 391-395 (5 pages)
Cholesterol-lowering effect of lactic acid bacteria (LAB: Streptococcus, Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium) is well-known. Thus, we investigated LAB isolated from human intestine on the cholesterol-lowering effect in vitro. Seven Streptococcus (61.1%), 11 Lactobacillus (71.8%) and 7 Bifidobacterium (27.9%) were isolated as acid (pH 2.5 and 3.0) and bile (0.3% oxgall) tolerant strains. Streptococcus HJS-1, Lactobacillus HJL-37 and Bifidobacterium HJB-4 were finally selected as probiotic strains... -
Gastrointestinal impaction by Parascaris equorum in a Thoroughbred foal in Jeju, Korea
Seung-ho Ryu, Jong-duck Jang, Ung-bok Bak, Chang-woo Lee, Hee-jeong Youn, Yonghoon Lyon Lee 대한수의학회 Journal of Veterinary Science 2 Pages
14 181-182 (2 pages)
A weanling Thoroughbred foal was admitted to Equine Hospital, Korea Racing Association with signs of colic. On admission the foal was sweating profusely, appeared anxious and exhibiting signs suggestive of abdominal pain. Clinical examination revealed: tachycardia (90 beats/min), tachypnea (50 breaths/min) and congested and slightly cyanotic mucous membranes. No intestinal sounds were auscultated in all 4 abdominal quadrants. Rectal palpation identified concurrent cecum and large colon... -
Analgesic effect of caudal epidural ketamine in cattle
Inhyung Lee, Tomo Yoshiuchi, Norio Yamagishi, Kenji Oboshi, Yu Ayukawa, Naoki Sasaki, Haruo Yamada 대한수의학회 Journal of Veterinary Science 4 Pages
10 261-264 (4 pages)
This study was performed to clarify the analgesic effect of ketamine injected into the first intercoccygeal (Co1- Co2) epidural space in standing cattle. Five adult cows were randomly received 3 treatments at least 1 week interval: 5, 10 and 20 mL of 5% ketamine. Sedation, analgesia, ataxia and other effects on cardiopulmonary and rumen functions were assessed before ketamine administration and until 120 min. The analgesia without sedation was shown at tail and perineum about 5 min after all... -
Mycobacterium bovis Infection in a Farmed Elk in Korea
Jae-Hoon Kim, Hyun-Joo Sohn, Kyung-Il Kang, Won-Il Kim, Jong-Sam An, and Young-Hwa Jean 대한수의학회 Journal of Veterinary Science 4 Pages
3 163-166 (4 pages)
A case of tuberculosis is reported in an eight-year-old, male, elk (Cervus elaphus nelsoni). The elk showed severe coughing, respiratory distress, abdominal breathing, anorexia, and severe progressive emaciation in the elk farm. At necropsy, the elk appeared in poor body condition. Mild enlargement of retropharyngeal and submandibular lymph node was observed in the head. Diffuse fibrinous pleuritis and purple red lobar pneumonia were found in the thorax. Well demarcated numerous dark yellow... -

Pain perception among patients treated with passive self-ligating fixed appliances and Invisalign?? aligners during the first week of orthodontic treatment
The Korean Journal of Orthodontics 7 Pages
The Korean Journal of Orthodontics 2018, 제 48권 제 5호 6 326-332 (7 pages)
Objective: This study was performed to compare the perception of pain between patients treated with passive self-ligating fixed appliances and those treated with Invisalign aligners. Methods: This prospective study conducted in Saudi Arabia used an estimated sample of 64 patients from a private dental clinic. After obtaining written informed consent, the patients were divided into two groups; one group (n = 32) was treated using passive self-ligating fixed appliances and the other group (n = 32)... -
Histomorphometric evaluation of the bone surrounding orthodontic miniscrews according to their adjacent root proximity
Hyun-Ju Oh, Jung-Yul Cha, Hyung-Seog Yu, Chung-Ju Hwang 대한치과교정학회 The Korean Journal of Orthodontics 9 Pages
The Korean Journal of Orthodontics 2018, 제 48권 제 5호 2 283-291 (9 pages)
Objective: This study was conducted to perform histomorphometric evaluations of the bone surrounding orthodontic miniscrews according to their proximity to the adjacent tooth roots in the posterior mandible of beagle dogs. Methods: Four male beagle dogs were used for this study. Six orthodontic miniscrews were placed in the interradicular spaces in the posterior mandible of each dog (n = 24). The implanted miniscrews were classified into no loading, immediate loading, and delayed loading groups... -
Prosthetic and Orthodontic Treatment of Adult Patients with a Unilateral Cleft Lip and Palate: Two Clinical Reports
10 Pages
3 11-20 (10 pages)
Adult cleft lip and/or palate (CL/P) patients with a maxillomandibular skeletal discrepancy and missing teeth require an interdisciplinary approach for esthetic satisfaction. The prosthetic and orthodontic treatments for two unilateral CL/P patients with 2 different prostheses and orthodontic interventions are described. A 20-year-old woman with a skeletal Class II, anterior open bite, and the missing teeth was treated with zirconia-based fixed dental prostheses after orthodontic treatment with... -
Reactive oxygen species increase neuronal excitability via activation of nonspecific cation channel in rat medullary dorsal horn neurons
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 6 Pages
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2017, Vol.21 No.4 2 371-376 (6 pages)
The caudal subnucleus of the spinal trigeminal nucleus (medullary dorsal horn; MDH) receives direct inputs from small diameter primary afferent fibers that predominantly transmit nociceptive information in the orofacial region. Recent studies indicate that reactive oxygen species (ROS) is involved in persistent pain, primarily through spinal mechanisms. In this study, we aimed to investigate the role of xanthine/xanthine oxidase (X/XO) system, a known generator of superoxide anion (O2·-), on...
