The pelvic ganglia provide autonomic innervations to the various urogenital organs, such as the urinary bladder, prostate, and penis. It is well established that both sympathetic and parasympathetic synaptic transmissions in autonomic ganglia are mediated mainly by acetylcholine (ACh). Until now, however, the properties of ACh-induced currents and its receptors in pelvic ganglia have not clearly been elucidated. In the present study, biophysical characteristics and molecular nature of nicotinic... -
Secondary Fish-Odor Syndrome Can be Acquired by Nitric Oxide-mediated Impairment of Flavin-containing Monooxygenase in Hepatitis B Virus-Infected Patients
Hyeon-GyuYi, Jung-NamLee, SeungDukRyu, Ju-HeeKang, Young-NamCha, Chang-ShinPark 대한생리학회-대한약리학회 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 6 Pages
대한생리학회-대한약리학회 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2004, Vol.8 No.4 7 213-218 (6 pages)
Primary fish-odor syndrome (FOS) is a genetic disorder caused by defective flavin-containing monooxygenase 3 gene (FMO3) with deficient N-oxidation of trimethylamine (TMA), causing trimethylaminuria (TMAU). By contrast, secondary FOS can be acquired by decreased FMO activities in patients with chronic liver diseases, but the underlying mechanisms are unknown. In the present study, we examined plasma NOx concentrations and viral DNA contents as well as in vivo FMO activities and their... -
Modulation of Pituitary Somatostatin Receptor Subtype (sst1-5) mRNA Levels by Growth Hormone (GH)-Releasing Hormone in Purified Somatotropes
SeungjoonPark, HeesoonPark, MinaLee, SookjinSohn, EunheeKim, JeechangJung, LawrenceA.Frohman, RhondaD.Kineman 대한생리학회-대한약리학회 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 6 Pages
대한생리학회-대한약리학회 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2003, Vol.7 No.2 5 79-84 (6 pages)
We have previously reported that expression of the somatostatin receptor subtypes, sst1-5, is differentially regulated by growth hormone (GH)-releasing hormone (GHRH) and forskolin (FSK), in vitro. GHRH binds to membrane receptors selectively located on pituitary somatotropes, activates adenylyl cyclase (AC) and increases sst1 and sst2 and decreases sst5 mRNA levels, without significantly altering the expression of sst3 and sst4. In contrast FSK directly activates AC in all pituitary cell types... -
Identification of ATP-sensitive K+ Conductances in Male Rat Major Pelvic Ganglion Neurons

Major pelvic ganglia (MPG) neurons are classified into sympathetic and parasympathetic neurons according to the electrophysiological properties; membrane capacitance (Cm), expression of T-type Ca2 channels, and the firing patterns during depolarization. In the present study, function and molecular expression of ATP-sensitive K (KATP) channels was investigated in MPG neurons of male rats. Only in parasympathetic MPG neurons showing phasic firing patterns, hyperpolarizing changes... -
Nimodipine as a Potential Pharmacological Tool for Characterizing R-Type Calcium Currents
SeogBaeOh 대한생리학회-대한약리학회 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 9 Pages
대한생리학회-대한약리학회 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2001, Vol.5 No.6 8 511-519 (9 pages)
Nimopidine, one of dihydropyridine derivatives, has been widely used to pharmacologically identify L-type Ca currents. In this study, it was tested if nimodipine is a selective blocker for L-type Ca currents in sensory neurons and heterologous system. In mouse dorsal root ganglion neurons (DRG), low concentrations of nimodipine (<10μM), mainly targeting L-type Ca currents, blocked high-voltage-activated calcium channel currents by ∼38%. Interestingly, high concentrations of nimodipine... -
Myocardial Protection by Recombinant Soluble P-selectin Glycoprotein Ligand-1 Suppression of Neutrophil and Platelet Interaction Following Ischemia and Reperfusion

Polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMNs) play an important role in myocardial ischemia/reperfusion (MI/R) injury. Moreover, platelets are also important blood cells that can aggravate myocardial ischemic injury. This study was designed to test the effects of PMNs and platelets separately and together in provoking cardiac dysfunction in isolated perfused rat hearts following ischemia and reperfusion. Additional control rat hearts were perfused with 75⁓106 PMNs, with 75⁓106 platelets, or... -

ChangMannKoSoon-JinKim 대한생리학회-대한약리학회 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 9 Pages
대한생리학회-대한약리학회 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2000, Vol.4 No.5 11 417-425 (9 pages)
The underlying mechanism commonly applicable for both the positive and negative force-frequency relationships (FFR) was pursued in left atria (LA) of rat and rabbit. The species differences in the roles of Na/Ca2 exchanger and sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR), which are major intracellular Ca2 regulatory mechanisms in the heart, were examined in the amplitude accommodation to the frequency that changed from 3 Hz to the variable test frequencies for 5 minutes in the electrically... -

대한생리학회-대한약리학회 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2000, Vol.4 No.3 10 253-261 (9 pages)
Head-out water immersion induces marked increase in the cardiac stroke volume. The present study was undertaken to characterize the stroke volume change by analyzing the aortic blood flow and left ventricular systolic time intervals. Ten men rested on a siting position in the air and in the water at 34.5oC for 30 min each. Their stroke volume, heart rate, ventricular systolic time intervals, and aortic blood flow indices were assessed by impedance cardiography. During immersion, the stroke... -

To examine individual variation in drug metabolism catalyzed by flavin-containing monooxygenase (FMO), 179 Korean volunteers' urinary molar concentration ratio of theobromine (TB) and caffeine (CA) was determined. Their urine was collected for 1 hr (between 4 and 5 hrs) after they drank a cup of coffee containing 115 mg CA and analyzed by an HPLC system. The lowest TB/CA ratio obtained was 0.40, the highest ratio was 15.17 (38-fold difference), and the median ratio for all subjects was 1.87....
