In the peripheral nerves, injury-induced cytokines and growth factors perform critical functions in the activation of both the MEK/ERK and JAK/STAT3 pathways. In this study, we determined that nerve injury-induced ERK activation was temporally correlated with STAT3 phosphorylation at the serine 727 residue. In cultured Schwann cells, we noted that ERK activation is required for the serine phosphorylation of STAT3 by neuropoietic cytokine interleukin-6 (IL-6). Serine phosphorylated STAT3 by IL-6... -
Water Extract of Samultang Reduces Apoptotic Cell Death by H2O2-Induced Oxidative Injury in SK-N-MC Cells

12 h after exposure to 30ՌM H2O2 and DNA laddering was detected via agarose electrophoresis gel. In addition, increases in sub-G1 phase and cleavage of the PARP protein were observed. However, treatment with SMT for 2 h prior to H2O2 exposure significantly reduced apoptotic cell death induced by incubation with 30ՌM H2O2 in SK-N-MC cells. Pre-incubation with water extract of SMT for 2 h prevented the H2O2-induced decrease in mitochondrial transmembrane potential. SMT also... -
Aprotinin Inhibits Vascular Smooth Muscle Cell Inflammation and Proliferation via Induction of HO-1

in a dose-dependent manner, which was potentiated during inflammatory condition. Aprotinin reduced cytokine mixture (CM)-induced iNOS expression in a dose dependent manner. Furthermore, aprotinin reduced CM-induced ROS generation, cell proliferation, and phosphorylation of JNK but not of P38 and ERK1/2 kinases. Aprotinin effects were reversed by pre-treatment with the HO-1 inhibitor, tin protoporphyrin IX (SnPPIX). HO-1 is therefore closely involved in inflammatory-stimulated VSMC proliferation... -
Effects of Repeated Citalopram Treatments on Chronic Mild Stress- Induced Growth Associated Protein-43 mRNA Expression in Rat Hippocampus

compared with unstressed controls, but this decrease was not further potentiated by CMS exposure. Similar decreases in GAP-43 mRNA expression were observed in CA1, CA3 and CA4 areas of the hippocampus only after repeated citalopram treatment in CMS-exposed rats. This result indicates that GAP-43 mRNA expression in the hippocampus may differently respond to acute and chronic stress, and that repeated citalopram treatment does not change CMS-induced decreases in GAP-43 mRNA expression in the GCL. -

60 min, dose- and time-dependently inhibited the CA secretory responses evoked by ACh (5.32 mM), high K+ (a direct membrane- depolarizer, 56 mM), DMPP (a selective neuronal nicotinic NN receptor agonist, 100ՌM) and McN-A-343 (a selective muscarinic M1 receptor agonist, 100ՌM). Also, in the presence of ketamine (100ՌM), the CA secretory responses evoked by veratridine (a voltage-dependent Na+ channel activator, 100ՌM), Bay-K-8644 (an L-type dihydropyridine Ca2+ channel... -
Effects of NOS Inhibitors on Arthritis and Arthritic Pain in Rats
SunSeekMin 대한생리학회-대한약리학회 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 6 Pages
대한생리학회-대한약리학회 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2007, Vol.11 No.6 4 253-258 (6 pages)
Among the arthritis symptoms, chronic pain is the most serious, and it can profoundly affect the quality of human life. Unfortunately, the mechanism of development in arthritis and arthritic pain has not yet been precisely elucidated. Accumulating evidence indicates that nitric oxide (NO) plays a pivotal role in nociceptive processing in the spinal cord. However, the modulation mechanism of NO in the peripheral site of arthritis and arthritic pain has not been clarified. Therefore, I determined... -
Identification of Differentially Expressed Genes in Murine Hippocampus by Modulation of Nitric Oxide in Kainic Acid-induced Neurotoxic Animal Model

Kainic acid (KA) causes neurodegeneration, but no consensus has been reached concerning its mechanism. Nitric oxide may be a regulator of the mechanism. We identified differentially expressed genes in the hippocampus of mice treated with kainic acid, together with or without L-NAME, a nonselective nitric oxide synthase inhibitor, using a new differential display PCR method based on annealing control primers. Eight genes were identified, including clathrin light polypeptide, TATA element... -
Effects of Repeated Nicotine Treatment on the Changes in Glutamate Receptor Subunits Levels in Mesocorticolimbic Dopamine Areas
Kuem-JuLee, Dong-HoonKim, Song-HyenChoi, You-ChanShin, Sang-HaPark, Bo-HyunMoon, SeungWooKang, EujinCho, Sang-HyunChoi, Boe-GwunChun, Min- 대한생리학회-대한약리학회 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 6 Pages
대한생리학회-대한약리학회 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2007, Vol.11 No.4 1 139-144 (6 pages)
Recent studies suggest that alterations in glutamate receptor subunit levels in mesocorticolimbic dopamine areas could account for neural adaptations in response to psychostimulant drugs. Although many drugs of abuse induce changes in ionotropic glutamate receptor subunits in mesocorticolimbic dopamine areas, the changes of ionotropic glutamate receptor subunits by repeated nicotine treatment in these areas are not known. To answer this question, we injected male Sprague-Dawley rats twice daily... -
Developmental Disability Animal Model Based on Neonatal Lipopolysaccharide with Altered 5-HT Function

대한생리학회-대한약리학회 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2007, Vol.11 No.3 6 113-119 (7 pages)
Developmental disability shows life-long behavioral abnormality with no significant physical malformation. This study was undertaken to develop an animal model for developmental disability by using two-factor approach. Lipopolysaccharide (LPS), a bacterial toxin, and NAN-190, a 5-HT1A receptor antagonist, were administered to Sprague-Dawley rats on postnatal day (PND) 5 to induce inflammation and an altered 5-HT system, respectively. Long-term alteration of behavior occurred in the drug-treated... -
Cisplatin-induced Alterations of Na+-dependent Phosphate Uptake in Renal Epithelial Cells

time- and dose-dependent manner, and also the Na-dependent uptake without altering Na-independent uptake. The cisplatin inhibition was not affected by the hydrogen peroxide scavenger catalase, but completely prevented by the hydroxyl radical scavenger dimethylthiourea. Antioxidants were ineffective in preventing the cisplatin-induced inhibition of phosphate uptake. Kinetic analysis indicated that cisplatin decreased Vmax of Na-dependent phosphate uptake without any change in...
