Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 16 Pages
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 2016, Vol.10 No.3 6 125-140 (16 pages)
We (1) describe the origin of the kindergarten system invented by Froebel, (2) explain how Froebel’s kindergarten system has influenced the kindergarten system in the USA and South Korea, and (3) offer conclusive statements and implications about the application of Froebel’s original thoughts on the kindergarten system in both countries. Four objectives of this paper are: (1) to understand the original ideas of the kindergarten system invented by Froebel, (2) to review how Froebel’s... -
Life Chances and Birth Registration: A Study from Rural China
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 26 Pages
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 2016, Vol.10 No.3 4 71-96 (26 pages)
In recent years early childhood education has become a focus for ambitious reforms in China. The emphasis on early experiences in this study was designed to address issues of unequal life chances, that is, the opportunities that individuals have to improve their lives across the life span. Children in rural China are more likely to be educationally disadvantaged and lack of birth registration compounds this problem. This paper examines data from rural China that was designed to collect household... -
Children’s Understanding of Racial Diversity through Role-Play: A Case Study of Kindergarteners in South Korea
Su-Jeong Wee, So Jung Kim, Kyoung Jin Kim Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 25 Pages
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 2016, Vol.10 No.2 7 125-149 (25 pages)
In spite of the emphases on multicultural education and role-playing activities in early childhood classrooms in South Korea, there has been a startling paucity of studies examining the effectiveness of role-play in teaching kindergarteners multiracial and ethnic awareness. This qualitative case study examines how South Korean kindergarteners develop their perception and understanding of racial and cultural diversity through role-plays. 25 five year-old children and their parents and teacher... -
Creating Collective Scientific Consciousness: A Cultural-Historical Study of Early Learning about Earth and Space in the Context of Family Imaginary Play
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 32 Pages

and revolution). A form of collectively supported scientific consciousness was realized through discussions, imagining and re-imagining of everyday objects as scientific phenomenon. Scientific laws, as the rules of the scientific play being enacted by the family, enabled the child to be both imagining and viscerally experiencing which cannot be seen. The findings contribute to understanding how families create playful conditions that support scientific learning in the early childhood period. -
Play and Policy in Early Childhood Education in the Asia Pacific Region
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 22 Pages
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 2016, Vol.10 No.2 2 7-28 (22 pages)
The place of play in early childhood curriculum documents in many countries in the Asia-Pacific region is undeniable. Yet the constructs of play in documents from East Asia closely resemble ideas of play that are valued in western early childhood research, textbooks, policy documents and contexts. This policy analysis discusses the changing concepts of play that are promoted in several countries and territories in the Asia-Pacific region. It investigates the challenges these changes present and... -
Young Chinese-Australian Children’s Use of Technology at Home: Parents’ and Grandparents’ Views
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 20 Pages
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 2016, Vol.10 No.1 5 87-106 (20 pages)
Young children are increasingly surrounded by a variety of technologies including television, computers, iPads, and mobile phones. This small qualitative study explored how Chinese immigrant families living in Australia viewed their children’s use of technology at home. Six parents and three grandparents representing nine different families with children aged three to six years were interviewed. Data were analysed using Rogoff’s (2003) personal, interpersonal and cultural-institutional planes... -

interview as ways to gain insights into children’s learning of mathematics,. Ten children in their first or second year of school recorded their understanding using drawing and/or writing after the period in which they were taught lessons on the measurement of mass. Later they met individually with an interviewer/researcher to discuss their drawing/writing and their learning. The Impress Me recording was found to be a useful prompt for the children to stimulate discussion about their learning. -

Year 3 children consistently outperformed the Prep year... -

As part of a cluster randomized controlled trial (Bundy et al., 2017), the after school-hours activities of 5-7 year old children were recorded by parents and other adult carers on four consecutive weekdays between 3:30pm-7:00pm. Records of time use showed most time was spent indoors in activities involving low levels of physical activity. The most-frequently-recorded activity was screen time, accounting for approximately one quarter of all activities. Higher levels of physical activity were... -
