Effects of Repeated Nicotine Treatment on the Changes in Glutamate Receptor Subunits Levels in Mesocorticolimbic Dopamine Areas
Kuem-JuLee, Dong-HoonKim, Song-HyenChoi, You-ChanShin, Sang-HaPark, Bo-HyunMoon, SeungWooKang, EujinCho, Sang-HyunChoi, Boe-GwunChun, Min- 대한생리학회-대한약리학회 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 6 Pages

Recent studies suggest that alterations in glutamate receptor subunit levels in mesocorticolimbic dopamine areas could account for neural adaptations in response to psychostimulant drugs. Although many drugs of abuse induce changes in ionotropic glutamate receptor subunits in mesocorticolimbic dopamine areas, the changes of ionotropic glutamate receptor subunits by repeated nicotine treatment in these areas are not known. To answer this question, we injected male Sprague-Dawley rats twice daily... -
A1 Receptor-mediated Protection against Amyloid Beta-induced Injury in Human Neuroglioma Cells

protective effect against Aβ-induced injury in neuroglial cells. The astrocyte-derived human neuroglioma cell line, A172 cells, and Aβ25∼35 were employed to produce an experimental Aβ-induced glial cell injury model. Adenosine significantly prevented Aβ-induced apoptotic cell death. Studies using various nucleotide receptor agonists and antagonists suggested that the protection was mediated by A1 receptors. Adenosine attenuated Aβ-induced impairment in mitochondrial functional integrity as... -
NMDA Receptor-dependent Inhibition of Synaptic Transmission by Acute Ethanol Treatment in Rat Corticostriatal Slices
SeJoonChoi, KiJungKim, HyeongSeokCho, SeongYunKim, Dong-SeokYim, Young-JinCho, SangJuneHahn, Ki-WugSung 대한생리학회-대한약리학회 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 6 Pages
대한생리학회-대한약리학회 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2006, Vol.10 No.6 2 303-308 (6 pages)
The effects of ethanol on corticostriatal synaptic transmission were examined, using extracellular recording and analysis of population spike amplitudes in rat brain slices, to study how acute ethanol intoxication impairs striatal function. Ethanol caused a decrease in population spike amplitudes in a dose dependent manner (50∼200 mM). Pretreatment with picrotoxin, a γ-amino butyric acid (GABA)A receptor antagonist, increased the population spikes but ethanol (100 mM) was still effective in... -
Calcium Ions are Involved in Modulation of Melittin-induced Nociception in Rat: II. Effect of Calcium Chelator
HongKeeShin, KyungHeeLee, ChulHyunCho 대한생리학회-대한약리학회 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 6 Pages

Melittin, a major component of bee venom, produces a sustained decrease in mechanical threshold, and an increase in spontaneous flinchings and paw thickness, which are characteristics similar to those induced by whole bee venom. Melittin-induced nociception has been known to be modulated by the changes in the activity of excitatory amino acid receptors, voltage-dependent calcium channels, cyclooxygenase and serotonin receptors. The present study was undertaken to investigate the role of calcium... -

This study was designed to investigate the expression and production of interleukin-1beta (IL-1β) in human peripheral blood of trained runners and untrained controls after temporary moderate intensity exercise. Male long-distance trained runners (TR) and untrained sedentary control subjects (SED) ran for 1 h at 70% of heart rate reserve (HRR). IL-1β gene and protein expressions were significantly higher in TR than those with SED at all 3 intervals examined independently. Significant increases... -
Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors Attenuate Cytotoxicity of 1-Methyl-4-phenylpyridinium by Suppressing Mitochondrial Permeability Transition
ChungSooLee 대한생리학회-대한약리학회 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 6 Pages
대한생리학회-대한약리학회 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2006, Vol.10 No.4 7 207-212 (6 pages)
Mitochondrial permeability transition has been shown to be involved in neuronal cell death. Mitochondrial monoamine oxidase (MAO)-B is considered to play a part in the progress of nigrostriatal cell death. The present study examined the effect of MAO inhibitors against the toxicity of 1-methyl-4- phenylpyridinium (MPP) in relation to the mitochondrial permeability transition. Chlorgyline (a selective inhibitor of MAO-A), deprenyl (a selective inhibitor of MAO-B) and tranylcypromine (non-... -
Effects of Phenylephrine on the Excitability of Medial Vestibular Nuclear Neurons in Rats

potential of medial vestibular nuclear neurons was decreased by phenylephrine (n=15). Phenylephrine increased the amplitude of afterhyperpolarization without changes in the resting membrane potential and spike width. In voltage-clamp mode, the whole potassium currents of the medial vestibular nuclear neurons were increased by phenylephrine (n=12). These experimental results suggest that α-receptor mediates the inhibitory effects on the neuronal activity of the medial vestibular nuclear neuron. -
Estrogen Pretreatment of Organotypic Hippocampal Slices Protects Neurons against Oxygen-Glucose Deprivation with Akt Activation
Eun-MiPark, SunghuiHong, Kyung-EunLee 대한생리학회-대한약리학회 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 8 Pages
대한생리학회-대한약리학회 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2006, Vol.10 No.3 2 123-130 (8 pages)
In several experimental models, estrogens protect neurons against ischemic insults. However, the recent clinical studies of hormone replacement showed negative results to prevent stroke. Therefore, optimal models to study estrogen replacement for neuroprotection are needed before its clinical application. Organotypic hippocampal slice under oxygen-glucose deprivation (OGD) has been established as a model of cerebral ischemia and has advantages to study drug effects. We investigated whether... -

The intermediate conductance Ca2-activated K channels (SK4, IKCa1) are present in lymphocytes, and their membrane expression is upregulated by various immunological stimuli. In this study, the activity of SK4 was compared between Bal-17 and WEHI-231 cell lines which represent mature and immature stages of murine B lymphocytes, respectively. The whole-cell patch clamp with high-Ca2 (0.8μM) KCl pipette solution revealed a voltage-independent K current that was blocked... -
Characterization of ETB Receptor-mediated Relaxation in Precontracted Mesenteric Artery from Streptozotocin-induced Diabetic Rats
YangKiEom, KoanHoiKim, ByungYongRhim 대한생리학회-대한약리학회 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 9 Pages
대한생리학회-대한약리학회 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2005, Vol.9 No.5 8 305-313 (9 pages)
ETB receptor may not play a role in maintaining mesenteric vascular tone in normal situation. However, the alterations in ETB receptor sensitivity were found in diabetic rats and lead to the ETB agonist-induced vasorelaxation, which is closely related to NO production. In the state of increased vascular resistance of diabetic mesenteric vascular bed, enhanced NO production by activation of iNOS could lead to compensatory vasorelaxation to modulate adequate perfusion pressure to splanchnic area.
