대한생리학회-대한약리학회 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2006, Vol.10 No.6 3 309-316 (8 pages)
The protective effects of baicalein, one of the flavonoids in Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi, were evaluated against 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA)-induced neuronal damage in mice and cultured human neuroblastoma cells. Nigrostriatal damage was induced by stereotaxically injecting 6-OHDA into the right striatum. Baicalein was administered intraperitoneally 30 min before and 90 min after lesion induction. Animals received a further daily injection of baicalein for 3 consecutive days. Two weeks after... -
Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors Attenuate Cytotoxicity of 1-Methyl-4-phenylpyridinium by Suppressing Mitochondrial Permeability Transition

cells treated with 500μM MPP. The MAO inhibitors at 10μM revealed a maximal inhibitory effect and beyond this concentration the inhibitory effect declined. On the basis of concentration, the inhibitory potency was tranylcypromine, deprenyl and chlorgyline order. The results suggest that chlorgyline, deprenyl and tranylcypromine attenuate the toxicity of MPP against PC12 cells by suppressing the mitochondrial permeability transition that seems to be mediated by oxidative stress. -
Changes of Serum Ferritin in Acute Lung Injury Induced by Intestinal Ischemia/Reperfusion

대한생리학회-대한약리학회 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2006, Vol.10 No.4 4 187-192 (6 pages)
Serum ferritin levels are increased in subjects at-risk for or with acute lung injury (ALI), and there are observations to suggest that increases in serum ferritin levels may help predict the development of ALI in at-risk individuals. To deepen our understanding of increases of serum ferritin and their relationship to the development of ALI, we measured serum ferritin levels before and after intestinal ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury in rats, and found that serum ferritin levels increased... -
Nitric Oxide Donor, NOR-3, Increased Expression of Cyclooxygenase-2, but not of Cyclooxygenase-1 in Cultured VSMC

NO and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) are contributes to vascular inflammation induced by various stimulation. The mechanism, which explains a linkage between NO and COX-2, could be of importance in promoting pathophysiological conditions of vessel. We investigated the effects of NO donors on the COX-1 and COX-2 mRNA/protein expression, as well as the nitrite production in culture medium of vascular smooth muscle cell (VSMC). VSMC was primarily cultured from thoracic aorta of rat. In this experiments,... -
Estrogen Pretreatment of Organotypic Hippocampal Slices Protects Neurons against Oxygen-Glucose Deprivation with Akt Activation
Eun-MiPark, SunghuiHong, Kyung-EunLee 대한생리학회-대한약리학회 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 8 Pages
대한생리학회-대한약리학회 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2006, Vol.10 No.3 2 123-130 (8 pages)
In several experimental models, estrogens protect neurons against ischemic insults. However, the recent clinical studies of hormone replacement showed negative results to prevent stroke. Therefore, optimal models to study estrogen replacement for neuroprotection are needed before its clinical application. Organotypic hippocampal slice under oxygen-glucose deprivation (OGD) has been established as a model of cerebral ischemia and has advantages to study drug effects. We investigated whether... -
Short-Term High Expression of Interferon-Alpha Modulates Progression of Type 1 Diabetes in NOD Mice

Type I diabetes (T1D) is an organ-specific autoimmune disease caused by the T cell-mediated destruction of the insulin-producing β cells in the pancreatic islets. The onset of T1D is the consequence of a progressive destruction of islet β cells mediated by an imbalance between effector CD4 T helper (Th)1 and regulatory CD4 Th2 cell function. Since interferon-alpha (IFN-α) has been known to modulate immune function and autoimmunity, we investigated whether administration of... -
YS 49, a Synthetic Isoquinoline Alkaloid, Protects Sheep Pulmonary Artery Endothelial Cells from tert-butylhydroperoxide-mediated Cytotoxicity

YS 49 significantly decreased the TBH-induced cellular injury. In the presence of zinc protophorphyrin, HO-1 inhibitor, effect of YS 49 was significantly inhibited, indicating that HO-1 plays a protective role for YS 49. Furthermore, YS 49 showed free radical scavenging activity as evidenced by 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and inhibition of lipid peroxidation. However, YS 49 did not inhibit apoptosis induced by lipopolysaccharide (LPS) in SPAECs. Taken together, HO-1 induction along with... -
Differential Inhibition of MPP+- or 6-Hydroxydopamine-induced Cell Viability Loss in PC12 Cells by Trifluoperazine and W-7

at 0.5∼1μM; beyond these concentrations the inhibitory effect declined. Both compounds at this concentration range did not cause cell death significantly. In contrast to MPP, the trifluoperazine and W-7 did not depress the cytotoxic effect of 6-OHDA. Addition of trifluoperazine and W-7 inhibited the cytosolic accumulation of cytochrome c and caspase-3 activation in PC12 cells treated with MPP and attenuated the formation of reactive oxygen species and the depletion of GSH,... -

protective substance against neuronal diseases. This study is aimed to investigate the effect of EGCG on NO-induced cell death in PC12 cells. Administration of sodium nitroprusside (SNP), a NO donor, decreased cell viability in a dose- and time-dependent manner and induced genomic DNA fragmentation with cell shrinkage and chromatin condensation. EGCG diminished the decrement of cell viability and the formation of apoptotic morphologenic changes as well as DNA fragmentation by SNP. EGCG played as... -
The Role of Mitochondrial ATP-sensitive Potassium Channel on Intestinal Pacemaking Activity

대한생리학회-대한약리학회 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2005, Vol.9 No.4 4 209-214 (6 pages)
we investigated the effect of mitochondrial ATP-sensitive potassium (mitoKATP) channel on pacemaking activity in cultured ICCs from murine small intestine by using whole-cell patch clamp techniques. Under current clamp mode, at 10μM glibenclamide, there was no change in pacemaking activity of ICCs. At 30μM glibenclamide, an inhibitor of the ATP sensitive K channels, we could find two examples. If pacemaking activity of ICCs was irregulating, pacemaking activity of ICCs was changed into...
