with E was significantly reduced 72 hour after OGD compared to that of non-treated slices (p＜0.05). E pretreatment also increased the expression of pAkt 72 hour after OGD compared to that of no treatment (p＜0.01). These data suggest that estrogen pretreatment may rescue neurons from ischemic insults through the activation of Akt and also indicate that our model would be a useful alternative method to study the mechanisms and effects of estrogen replacement treatment for neuroprotection.

in a tail crossover phenomenon. Block of Kv1.5 by CsA was use-dependent. CsA also blocked Kv1.3 currents at ⁢50 mV in a reversible concentration-dependent manner with an apparent IC50 of 1.1μM. The same effects of CsA on Kv1.3 were also observed in excised inside-out patches when applied to the internal surface of the membrane. The present results suggest that CsA acts directly on Kv1.5 currents as an open-channel blocker, independently of the effects of CsA on calcineurin activity.

similar extent as palmitate oxidation by a decrease of plasma FFA level. This suggested that β-oxidation might be an important process to regulate fatty acid oxidation at the early period of plasma FFA change. Citrate synthase activity was not altered by the change of plasma FFA level. In conclusion, the critical step in fatty acids oxidation of skeletal muscles by the change of plasma FFA level by acipimox in fasting rats might be the β-oxidation step rather than CPT1 and TCA cycle pathways.

was measured under basal and 60μU/ml of insulin with or without 50 ng/ml of leptin. Leptin had no direct stimulatory effect on glucose transport under both basal and insulin-stimulated conditions in vitro. These results demonstrate that leptin injection to high fat diet fed rats recovered impaired insulin responsiveness of the skeletal muscles and muscle triglyceride concentration. However, there was no direct stimulatory effect of leptin on insulin sensitivity of the skeletal muscle in vitro.

Furthermore, the crude extract and aqueous fraction increased the [Ca2⁢]i of the cultured osteoblast cells, and 300μM Cd2⁢, specific calcium channel blocker, completely blocked the increase. the formalin-induced behavioral responses. To investigate whether IL-1 receptor was involved in the intra-articular administration of IL-1β-induced hyperalgesic response, IL-1 receptor antagonist (IL- ra, 50 ng) was administrated together with IL-1β injection. IL-1β receptor antagonist blocked IL-1β- induced hyperalgesic response in the TMJ formalin test. These results suggest that intra-articular injection of IL-1β facilitated the transmission of nociceptive information in the TMJ area.

(RACK-1), anchoring protein for activated PKC, was more induced with exposure to coplanar PCBs than non-coplanar PCBs. Reverse transcription PCR (RT-PCR) analysis showed induction of neurogranin (RC-3) and growth associated protein-43 (GAP-43) mRNA with non-coplanar PCBs. The results indicate that these factors may be useful biomarkers for differentiating non-coplanar PCBs from coplanar PCBs. The present study demonstrated that non-coplanar PCBs are more neuroactive congeners than coplanar PCBs.
