The Plant-Stress Metabolites, Hexanoic Aacid and Melatonin, Are Potential “Vaccines” for Plant Health Promotion
Anne J. Anderson, Young Cheol Kim 한국식물병리학회 The Plant Pathology Journal 13 Pages

A plethora of compounds stimulate protective mecha- nisms in plants against microbial pathogens and abiotic stresses. Some defense activators are synthetic com- pounds and trigger responses only in certain protective pathways, such as activation of defenses under regula- tion by the plant regulator, salicylic acid (SA). This review discusses the potential of naturally occurring plant metabolites as primers for defense responses in the plant. The production of the metabolites, hexanoic acid and... -
Microbial Community Dysbiosis and Functional Gene Content Changes in Apple Flowers due to Fire Blight

Despite the plant microbiota plays an important role in plant health, little is known about the potential interactions of the flower microbiota with pathogens. In this study, we investigated the microbial community of apple blossoms when infected with Erwinia amylovora. The long-read sequencing technology, which significantly increased the genome sequence resolution, thus enabling the characterization of fire blight- induced changes in the flower microbial community. Each sample showed a unique... -

We also found that several metabolic pathways differ significantly between infected and healthy trees. In particular, we observed differences in sugar metabolites. The finding provides that sucrose metabolites are important for colonization of E. amylovora in host tissue. Our results provide fundamental information on the microbial community structures between E. amylovora infected and uninfected trees, which will contribute to developing novel control strategies for the fire blight disease. -
Incidence of Alternaria Species Associated with Watermelon Leaf Blight in Korea
Oh-Kyu Kwon, A-Ram Jeong, Yong-Jik Jeong, Young-Ah Kim, Jaekyung Shim, Yoon Jeong Jang, Gung Pyo Lee, Chang-Jin Park 한국식물병리학회 The Plant Pathology Journal 10 Pages
한국식물병리학회 The Plant Pathology Journal 2021, 37권 4호 2 329-338 (10 pages)
Alternaria leaf blight is one of the most common dis- eases in watermelon worldwide. In Korea, however, the Alternaria species causing the watermelon leaf blight have not been investigated thoroughly. A total of 16 Alternaria isolates was recovered from diseased water- melon leaves with leaf blight symptoms, which were collected from 14 fields in Korea. Analysis of internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region, glyceraldehyde-3-phos- phate dehydrogenase (GAPDH), and RNA polymerase II second largest... -
Antagonistic and Plant Growth-Promoting Effects of Bacillus velezensis BS1 Isolated from Rhizosphere Soil in a Pepper Field

combined sequence analysis using 16S rRNA and partial gyrA sequences, strain BS1 was identified as Bacillus velezen- sis, a member of the B. subtilis species complex. BS1 produced hydrolytic enzymes (cellulase and protease) and iron-chelating siderophores. It also promoted chili pepper (cv. Nockwang) seedling growth compared with untreated plants. The study concluded that B. velezensis BS1 has good potential as a biocontrol agent of anthrac- nose disease in chili pepper caused by C. scovillei. -
Overcoming Encouragement of Dragon Fruit Plant (Hylocereus undatus) against Stem Brown Spot Disease Caused by Neoscytalidium dimidiatum Using Bacillus subtilis Combined with Sodium Bicarbonate

growth of the fungus, Neoscytalidium dimidiatum, the agent causing stem brown spot disease and was notably effective in preventing fungal invasion of dragon fruit plant. This combination not only directly suppressed the growth of N. dimidiatum, but also indirectly affected the develop- ment of the disease by eliciting the dragon-fruit plant’s defense response. Substantial levels of the pathogenesis- related proteins, chitinase and glucanase, and the phenylpropanoid biosynthetic pathway enzymes,... -

prog- ress curve value (95.79), making it the best to control BLS disease. Consortium treatment TKSC3 + SS8 induced the highest POX and GLU enzyme activities at 114.32 μmol/min/mg protein and 260.32 abs/min/mg protein, respectively, with both enzymes responsible for plant cell wall reinforcement and resistant interac- tion. Our results revealed that in addition to promoting plant growth, these Streptomyces strains also mediated ISR in rice plants, thereby, ensuring protection from BLS disease. -

or neutral evolution in the BSBV isolates studied. How- ever, positive selection was detected at codon 135 in the TGB1, which could be an adaptation in order to facili- tate the movement and overcome the host plant resis- tance genes. We expect that the information on genome properties and genetic variability of BSBV, particularly in TGB3, TGB1, and CPRT genes, assist in developing effective control measures in order to prevent severe losses and make amendments in management strate- gies. -
The Membrane-Bound Protein, MoAfo1, Is Involved in Sensing Diverse Signals from Different Surfaces in the Rice Blast Fungus

To establish an infection, fungal pathogens must recog- nize diverse signals from host surfaces. The rice blast fungus, Magnaporthe oryzae, is one of the best models studying host-pathogen interactions. This fungus recog- nizes physical or chemical signals from the host surfac- es and initiates the development of an infection struc- ture called appressorium. Here, we found that protein MoAfo1(appressorium formation, MGG_10422) was involved in sensing signal molecules such as cutin mono- mers and... -

Chemical and biological agents were evaluated to in- hibit Colletotrichum fructicola, Phytophthora cactorum, and Lasiodiplodia theobromae causing strawberry dis- eases. Mycelial growths of C. fructicola were gradually arrested by increasing concentrations of fungicides pyraclostrobin and iminoctadine tris (albesilate). P. cac- torum and L. theobromae were more sensitive to pyra- clostrobin compared to C. fructicola, but iminoctadine tris (albesilate) was not or less effective to limit P. cac-...
