최근 산업이 고도화됨에 따라 화석연료의 사용량이 현저하게 증가하게 되어 지구 온난화, 산성비 등의 문제가 크게 대두되고 있다. 이에 따라 화석연료를 대체할 수 있는 새로운 환경친화적인 에너지의 개발이 절실히 요구되고 있는 실정이다. 현재 부각되고 있는 대체에너지원으로는 조력, 태양열,지열, 풍력, 해양에너지 등 자연에너지와 물을 원료로 하는 수소에너지이다. 그 중 수소는 지구상에 풍부하게 존재할 뿐만 아니라 수소를 연소시키면 열에너지로 변환 가능하며, 내연기관을 이용하면 기계에너지로 만들 수가 있다.
