Neuroprotective Effect of 8-OH-DPAT on Long-term Sequelae from Prenatal Ischemia in Rats
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 5 Pages

The role of 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT)1A receptor activity in prenatal ischemia was studied, by injecting 8-hydroxy-dipropylaminotetraline (8-OH-DPAT; 50μg/kg, s.c.), a 5-HT1A agonist on gestation day 17, and 30 min later inducing transient ischemia by ligating the uterine vessels for 30 min. On postnatal day 95, rats that had experienced prenatal ischemia showed impaired motor coordination and reduced concentration of 5-HT in the cerebellum compared with Sham-operated controls. In addition,... -
Effect of PUVA on Nerve Growth Factor Expression in Cultured Keratinocytes

also a survival factor for keratinocytes. NGF may act in the hyperproliferative condition, psoriasis. Clinically, the combination of psoralen and UVA (PUVA) has been used in the treatment of a wide variety of cutaneous disorders, such as psoriasis and vitiligo. However, the precise therapeutic mechanism of PUVA on the dermatologic diseases remains unclear. The purpose of this study was to examine whether the expression of NGF in cultured keratinocytes is influenced by PUVA. Thus, normal human... -
Effects of Interleukin-1β and Tumor Necrosis Factor-α on the Release of Collagenase and Gelatinase from Osteoblasts
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 6 Pages

A large number of factors such as osteotropic hormones, cytokines, or growth factors are related to the bone remodeling which is characterized by the coupling of osteoclast-mediated bone resorption and osteoblast-mediated bone formation. Recent investigations have indicated that cytokines such as interleukin-1β (IL-1β) and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) play a potential role in the bone resorption associated with a variety of pathological conditions such as inflammatory osteolytic disease.... -
Identification of ATP-sensitive K+ Conductances in Male Rat Major Pelvic Ganglion Neurons
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 8 Pages

Major pelvic ganglia (MPG) neurons are classified into sympathetic and parasympathetic neurons according to the electrophysiological properties; membrane capacitance (Cm), expression of T-type Ca2 channels, and the firing patterns during depolarization. In the present study, function and molecular expression of ATP-sensitive K (KATP) channels was investigated in MPG neurons of male rats. Only in parasympathetic MPG neurons showing phasic firing patterns, hyperpolarizing changes... -
Effects of Kanagawa Hemolysin on Blood Pressure and Arterial Tone in Rats
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 9 Pages

Kanagawa hemolysin (KH), an exotoxin produced from Kanagawa phenomenon-positive Vibrio parahemolyticus, has been shown to possess various biological activities including hemolysis, enterotoxicity, cytotoxicity, and cardiotoxicity. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of KH on the cardiovascular system and its mechanism, employing in vivo and in vitro experiments of the rat. Intracerebroventricular (icv) administration of 100 mHU KH produced a marked and continuous pressor effect... -
Neuronal Activity of the Vestibular Nuclei Following Acute Hypotension in Rats

of cFL neurons in contralateral vestibular nuclei to the lesion side, but not in ipsilateral vestibular nuclei. However, cFL protein was not expressed in bilateral vestibular nuclei after acute hypotension in bilateral labyrinthectomized animals. These results suggest that the peripheral vestibular receptors might play a significant role in controlling blood pressure following acute hypotension via activation of type I neurons and inhibition of type II neurons in the vestibular nuclei. -
Role of Calmodulin in the Generation of Reactive Oxygen Species and Apoptosis Induced by Tamoxifen in HepG2 Human Hepatoma Cells
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 6 Pages
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2002, Vol.6 No.4 3 187-192 (6 pages)
Tamoxifen, an antiestrogen, has previously been shown to induce apoptosis in HepG2 human hepatoblastoma cells through activation of the pathways independent of estrogen receptors, i.e., intracellular Ca2 increase and generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). However, the mechanism of tamoxifen to link increased intracellular Ca2 to ROS generation is currently unknown. Thus, in this study we investigated the possible involvement of calmodulin, a Ca2 activated protein, and... -
Differential Changes of ATP-sensitive Potassium Channel Current after Hypoxia-reperfusion Treatment in Mouse Neuroblastoma 2a (N2a) Cell

opened using diazoxide, the hypoxia for 6 hours significantly increased the current density in comparison to control condition (p<0.001). Interestingly, the augmentation in the KATP current density reduced after exposure to the 12 hours hypoxic condition (p<0.001). Taken together, these results suggest that KATP channels appear to be recruited more in cells exposed to the 6 hours hypoxic condition and they may play a protective role against hypoxia-reperfusion damage within the time range. -
Effects of Central GABA and Glutamate on Blood Pressure and Single Unit Spikes in the RVLM of Rats
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 6 Pages
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2002, Vol.6 No.3 4 149-154 (6 pages)
The blood pressure (BP) is regulated by the nervous system and humoral factors, such as renin- angiotensin system, vasopressin and others. In the present study, we examined the central effects of glutamate and GABA on the cardiovascular regulation by injection of these substances into the lateral ventricle and also investigated the relationship between these central effects and the action of angiotensin II (Ang). Male Sprague Dawley rats, 350∼400 g, were anesthetized with urethane and... -

mM [Ca2]o but did not show any effect under the nominally Ca2-free condition. Even after the store depletion with 30μM 2,5-di-tert- butylhydroquinone (BHQ) or 30μM ATP, LPC could still increase the [Ca2]i under the condition of 1.5 mM [Ca2]o. The time required to increase [Ca2]i (about 1 minute) was longer than that for ATP-induced [Ca2]i increase (10∼30 seconds). LPC-induced [Ca2]i increase was completely blocked by 1μM La3. Transient...
