Open Access : Enhanced Biological Control of Phytophthora Blight of Pepper by Biosurfactant-Producing Pseudomonas
The Plant Pathology Journal 9 Pages
7 418-426 (9 pages)
+ mefenoxam (0.2 mg product/ml) were applied by foliar spraying, and P. capsici inoculum was incorporated into the pot soil three days after treatments. In the first experiment, four Pseudomonas strains resulted in significant reduction from 48.4 to 61.3% in Phytophthora blight severity. In the second experiment, bacterial treatments combining with olive oil (5 mL per plant) significantly enhanced biological control activity, resulting in a reduction of disease level ranging from 56.8 to 81.1%.... -
Research Articles : Prevalence of Tobacco mosaic virus in Iran and Evolutionary Analyses of the Coat Protein Gene
The Plant Pathology Journal 14 Pages
5 260-273 (14 pages)
The incidence and distribution of Tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) and related tobamoviruses was determined using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay on 1,926 symptomatic horticultural crops and 107 asymptomatic weed samples collected from 78 highly infected fields in the major horticultural crop-producing areas in 17 provinces throughout Iran. The results were confirmed by host range studies and reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction. The overall incidence of infection by these viruses in... -
Research Articles : RNAseq-based Transcriptome Analysis of Burkholderia glumae Quorum Sensing
The Plant Pathology Journal 11 Pages
4 249-259 (11 pages)
Burkholderia glumae causes rice grain rot and sheath rot by producing toxoflavin, the expression of which is regulated by quorum sensing (QS). The QS systems of B. glumae rely on N-octanoyl homoserine lactone, synthesized by TofI and its cognate receptor TofR, to activate the genes for toxoflavin biosynthesis and an IclR-type transcriptional regulator gene, qsmR. To understand genome-wide transcriptional profiling of QS signaling, we employed RNAseq of the wild-type B. glumae BGR1 with... -
Take-all of Wheat and Natural Disease Suppression: A Review
The Plant Pathology Journal 11 Pages
2 125-135 (11 pages)
In agro-ecosystems worldwide, some of the most important and devastating diseases are caused by soil-borne necrotrophic fungal pathogens, against which crop plants generally lack genetic resistance. However, plants have evolved approaches to protect themselves against pathogens by stimulating and supporting specific groups of beneficial microorganisms that have the ability to protect either by direct inhibition of the pathogen or by inducing resistance mechanisms in the plant. One of the best... -
Migration and Distribution of Graft-inoculated Jujube Witches`-broom Phytoplasma within a Cantharanthus roseus Plant
The Plant Pathology Journal 6 Pages
8 191-196 (6 pages)
Periwinkle seedlings (Cantharanthus roseus) were inoculated with jujube witches`- broom (JWB) phytoplasma via grafting to analyze the migration of JWB phytoplasmas within the host plant. The phytoplasmas were detected using nested polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and fluorescence microscopy. Fluorescence microscopy was a simple and easy method of detecting phytoplasmas; however, it was not sufficiently sensitive to detect very low phytoplasma concentrations. Therefore, the migration of JWB... -
Research Notes : Multiplex PCR Assay for Simultaneous Detection of Korean Quarantine Phytoplasmas

for each ``Ca. Phytoplasma`` species. In addition, ten important ``Ca. Phytoplasma`` species could be easily determined by recognizing band patterns specific for each phytoplasma species from three primer sets. Moreover, a high sensitivity of multiplex PCR for each primer set was observed for samples containing a low DNA concentration (10 ng/ul). This study provides the useful multiplex PCR assay as a convenient method to detect the presence of ten important quarantine phytoplasmas in Korea. -
Identification of Alternaria alternata as a Causal Agent for Leaf Blight in Syringa Species
The Plant Pathology Journal 8 Pages
4 120-127 (8 pages)
While many isolates of Alternaria alternata are common saprophytes on trees and shrubs, this study clearly demonstrated that A. alternata is a primary pathogen in lilac (Syringa sp.), causing a leaf-blight that affects different Syringa species. Isolates of Alternaria sp. were collected from leaf blight samples of lilacs in the field. The internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region and morphological characterization were used to identify lilac blight pathogen. Based on 100% ITS nucleotide sequence... -
Isolation and Identification of Burkholderia pyrrocinia CH-67 to Control Tomato Leaf Mold and Damping-off on Crisphead Lettuce and Tomato
The Plant Pathology Journal 9 Pages
10 59-67 (9 pages)
A bacterial strain CH-67 which exhibits antagonism towards several plant pathogenic fungi such as Botrytis cinerea, Fulvia fulva, Rhizoctonia solani, Sclerotinia sclerotiorum, Colletotrichum sp. and Phytophthora sp. was isolated from forest soil by a chitin-baiting method. This strain was identified as Burkholderia cepacia complex (Bcc) and belonging to genomovar IX (Burkholderia pyrrocinia) by colony morphology, biochemical traits and molecular method like 16S rRNA and recA gene analysis. This... -
Antifungal Activity of Lower Alkyl Fatty Acid Esters against Powdery Mildews
The Plant Pathology Journal 7 Pages
9 360-366 (7 pages)
In the course of a searching environmental friendly antifungal compounds, we found that mixture of methyl esters of fatty acids obtained from soybean oil had potent control efficacy against barley powdery mildew (Blumeria graminis f. sp. hordei). In this study, ten alkyl fatty acid esters (AFAEs) were tested for in vivo antifungal activity against five plant diseases such as rice blast, rice sheath blight, tomato gray mold, tomato late blight and barley powdery mildew. Some AFAEs showed the most... -
Survey of Fungicide Resistance for Chemical Control of Botrytis cinerea on Paprika
The Plant Pathology Journal 6 Pages
11 447-452 (6 pages)
Four hundred and sixty six isolates of B. cinerea were obtained from infected leaves, stems and fruits of paprika grown in greenhouses or plastic film houses in Gangwon province, Korea, between August and November in 2006 and 2007. These isolates were classified into five representative phenotypes of resistant (R) and sensitive (S) reactions as SSR, SRR, RSS, RRS and RSR according to the responses of isolates against benzimidazole, dicarboximide and N-phenylcarbamate fungicide in order. The...
