Graphitization of PAN-based carbon fibers by CO₂ laser irradiation
Liangbo Yao, Weimin Yang, Sanyang Li, Yang Sha, Jing Tan, Ying An, Haoyi Li 한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 6 Pages
한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 2017, Vol.24 13 97-102 (6 pages)
high specific modulus that have attracted much interest in the aerospace industry, but their high manufacturing cost and low yield are still problems that prevent their wide applications in practice. This paper presents a laser-based process for graphitization of carbon fiber (CF) and explores the effect of laser radiation on the microstructure of CF. The obtained Raman spectra indicate that the outer surface of CF evolves from turbostratic structures into a three-dimensional ordered state after... -
Preparation of carbon discs using petroleum-based binder pitch reformed with carbon black
Sangmin Lee, Kyung Hoon Kim, Young-Seak Lee 한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 4 Pages
한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 2017, Vol.23 13 84-87 (4 pages)
a carbon fibers, graphite brushes, aluminum engineering and binders, because carbon materials have high specific strength, high conductivity, excellent thermal shock resistance, and other favorable properties [1-4]. These carbon materials are prepared from various precursors, such as polyacrylonitrile (PAN), phenolic resins and pitches. Among these precursors, pitches are more economical than PAN and phenol resin, and it is possible to control the pitch properties according to the manufacturing... -
Lyocell-based activated carbon fibers improved the adsorption of harmful gas properties when produced via dual-simultaneous treatments
Byong Chol Bai, Ji Sun Im, Young-Seak Lee 한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 5 Pages
한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 2017, Vol.23 10 69-73 (5 pages)
In gas adsorption processes, activated carbon fibers (ACFs) are used for the adsorption of the harmful gases that are generated by coal or oil combustion, and they have been widely studied [1,2]. ACFs have been used for harmful gas removal because of their specific surface area, micropores, reproducibility, safety, and processing ability, which are beneficial properties for a wide range of applications [3,4]. -
Fabrication of carbon fiber SMC composites with vinyl ester resin and effect of carbon fiber content on mechanical properties
Haksung Lee, Mongyoung Huh, Jaeyoung Yoon, Dasom Lee, Seonyul Kim, Shinjae Kang 한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 4 Pages
한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 2017, Vol.22 11 101-104 (4 pages)
Fiber reinforced composites are being used in the automotive industry and other manufacturing fields. Their properties, including high specific stiffness, strength and weight reduction make fiber composite materials an attractive replacement for metal components. The development of composites like carbon fiber reinforced plastic and related production technologies have contributed to the increasing application of fiber composite materials. Many new components have recently been adapted,... -
The effects of carbon coating onto graphite filler on the structure and properties of carbon foams
Ji-Hyun Kim, Do Young Kim, Young-Seak Lee 한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 5 Pages
한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 2017, Vol.21 16 111-115 (5 pages)
the mechanical properties of metal-based heat sink materials are difficult to control at temperatures over 550°C [2,3]. Thus, CFms are actively investigated as heat sink materials because of their good properties, such as high thermal stability, high thermal/electrical conductivity, low density, high porosity and high specific surface area [4,5]. CFms are suitable materials for applications in phase-change materials, such as in latent heat thermal energy storage and lithium-ion batteries [6-9]. -
Adsorption capability of activated carbon synthesized from coconut shell
Md Shariful Islam, Bee Chin Ang, Samira Gharehkhani, Amalina Binti, Muhammad Afifi 한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 9 Pages
한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 2016, Vol.20 1 1-9 (9 pages)
Activated carbon was synthesized from coconut shells. The Brunauer, Emmett and Teller surface area of the synthesized activated carbon was found to be 1640 m2/g with a pore volume of 1.032 cm3/g. The average pore diameter of the activated carbon was found to be 2.52 nm. By applying the size-strain plot method to the X-ray diffraction data, the crystallite size and the crystal strain was determined to be 42.46 nm and 0.000489897, respectively, which indicate a perfect crystallite structure. The... -
Microstructural changes of polyacrylonitrile-based carbon fibers (T300 and T700) due to isothermal oxidation (1): focusing on morphological changes using scanning electron microscopy
Seong-Moon Oh, Sang-Min Lee, Dong-Su Kang, Jae-Seung Roh 한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 6 Pages
한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 2016, Vol.18 3 18-23 (6 pages)
Polyacrylonitrile (PAN)-based carbon fibers have high specific strength, elastic modulus, thermal resistance, and thermal conductivity. Due to these properties, they have been increasingly widely used in various spheres including leisure, aviation, aerospace, military, and energy applications. However, if exposed to air at high temperatures, they are oxidized, thus weakening the properties of carbon fibers and carbon composite materials. As such, it is important to understand the oxidation... -
Monolithic porous carbon materials prepared from polyurethane foam templates
Jo?o Pires, Andr? Janeiro, Filipe J. Oliveira, Alexandre C. Bastos, Mois?s L. Pinto 한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 7 Pages
한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 2016, Vol.18 2 11-17 (7 pages)
Mesoporosity was achieved through the use of soft templating with surfactant Pluronic F127, and macroporosity from the polyurethane foams was retained. Conditions to obtain high porosity materials were optimized. The best materials have high specific surface areas (380 and 582 m2 g?1, respectively) and high electrical conductivity, which make them good candidates for supports in sensors. These materials showed an almost linear dependence between the potential and the pH of aqueous solutions. -
Hydrogen storage capacity of highly porous carbons synthesized from biomass-derived aerogels
Yong-Ki Choi, Soo-Jin Park 한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 5 Pages
한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 2015, Vol.16 No.2 9 127-131 (5 pages)
to enhance the specific surface area and microporosity. The micro-structural properties and morphologies were measured by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy, respectively. The specific surface area and microporosity were investigated by N2/77 K adsorption-desorption isotherms using the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller method and Barrett-Joyner-Halenda equation, respectively. Hydrogen storage capacity was dependent on the activation temperature. The highest capacity of 2.7 wt% at 77 K and 1... -

Jong-Ho Lee, Hong-Joo Ahn, Donghwan Cho, Jeong-Il Youn, Young-Jig Kim, Han-Jun Oh 한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 8 Pages
한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 2015, Vol.16 No.2 4 93-100 (8 pages)
during KOH chemical modification. However, the BET surface area significantly decreased by nitric acid (HNO3) chemical modification due to severe chemical dissolution of the pore structure. The capability of electrosorption by an electrical double-layer and the efficiency of capacitive deionization (CDI) thus showed the greatest enhancement by chemical KOH modification due to the appropriate increase of carboxyl and hydroxyl functional groups and the enlargement of the specific surface area.
