Young Chinese-Australian Children’s Use of Technology at Home: Parents’ and Grandparents’ Views
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 20 Pages
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 2016, Vol.10 No.1 5 87-106 (20 pages)
Young children are increasingly surrounded by a variety of technologies including television, computers, iPads, and mobile phones. This small qualitative study explored how Chinese immigrant families living in Australia viewed their children’s use of technology at home. Six parents and three grandparents representing nine different families with children aged three to six years were interviewed. Data were analysed using Rogoff’s (2003) personal, interpersonal and cultural-institutional planes... -

as well as the cultural meaning of bats in the local culture. (3) The kindergarten teachers had to solve problems in science teaching, such as problems related to the children’s observation of bats and teachers’ content knowledge in science teaching. This study provides us a lens to examine how early childhood teachers implemented a science thematic curriculum in a kindergarten classroom. Recommendations for science teaching in early childhood education are also discussed in the paper. -
Motivation, Responsibility and Anxiety: Parenting Dispositions of Chinese Mothers
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 19 Pages
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 2016, Vol.10 No.1 1 1-19 (19 pages)
One of the key principles in the ideology which underpins education is the value of children’s family experience. Central to this idea is the view of parents as important. Parenting has become a vital dimension in contemporary education. Parenting discourses traditionally focus on such concepts as parenting style, approach, attitude or practice. The main consideration behind these concepts is what parents appear to be doing at a single point of time, referring to parenting per se. This paper... -
Low Levels of after School-Hours Social Interaction and Physical Activity of 5-7 Year Olds
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 14 Pages
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 2018, Vol.12 No.2 5 79-92 (14 pages)
As part of a cluster randomized controlled trial (Bundy et al., 2017), the after school-hours activities of 5-7 year old children were recorded by parents and other adult carers on four consecutive weekdays between 3:30pm-7:00pm. Records of time use showed most time was spent indoors in activities involving low levels of physical activity. The most-frequently-recorded activity was screen time, accounting for approximately one quarter of all activities. Higher levels of physical activity were... -
Paternal Participation in School Activities in a University Laboratory Preschool in the Philippines
Carolyn Victoria Uy Ronquillo, Maria Perlita E. de Leon 환태평양유아교육연구학회 Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 21 Pages
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 2014, Vol.8 No.3 4 59-79 (21 pages)

It examined paternal participation through the fathers’ attendance in seven school-wide events and an in-depth interview. It aimed to set apart school activities which, fathers prefer / less prefer to attend and identified variables that influence paternal participation. From the pool of 134 fathers who participated in the study, those with high and low attendance were identified and... -

Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 19 Pages
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 2014, Vol.8 No.3 2 21-39 (19 pages)
practices in terms of location and educational background. (3) There was a significantly positive correlation between aesthetic teaching beliefs and practices. (4) The interviewed early childhood educators agreed with the importance of aesthetic education. They argued to develop children’s aesthetic feelings through exploring nature and arts, and to guide children in appreciating various arts and local arts. However, their difficulties were a lack of enough knowledge in arts appreciation, and... -
Rethinking Story Reading in U.S. Preschools: Making Story Comprehension and Social-Emotional Understanding the Priority
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 21 Pages
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 2014, Vol.8 No.2 2 5-25 (21 pages)
This paper begins with a brief historical overview that provides a context for understanding approaches to story reading in U.S. preschools. It also discusses factors that have prompted a new trend in story reading, one emphasizing story comprehension directly, not as a vehicle for developing only oral vocabulary and print-related literacy skills. This backdrop, as well as discussions of new research and achievement difficulties in school-age children, sets the stage for the author’s suggestion... -
Taiwanese Mothers as Their Child’s First English Teacher: Issues and Challenges
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 18 Pages
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 2013, Vol.7 No.3 1 1-18 (18 pages)
In Taiwan, current policy encourages parents to participate fully in their children’s education and to regard themselves as their children’s first teacher. There is, however, little data about whether mothers do indeed perceive themselves as a “teacher” of English language and literacy to their pre-school-aged children in home contexts. Nor is it clear how they enact this role and responsibility during everyday interactions with their children. This study investigated Taiwanese mothers’... -

Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 18 Pages
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 2013, Vol.7 No.2 3 29-46 (18 pages)
This study examined the effects of picture book shared reading training for marriage-immigrant Korean mothers of young children with poor to moderate levels of Korean language skill. The training course offered opportunities for mothers to learn to read Korean picture storybooks and to share these with their children. The course instructor conducted interviews with the mothers, both before the course started and at its end. Observations were made in the Philippine Center in Seongbuk-Gu, Seoul,... -

Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 14 Pages
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 2011, Vol.5 No.2 5 93-106 (14 pages)
50-60 minutes each time. I collected the data in three different ways: field notes, audio recordings, and video recordings. Data was analyzed according to five mathematical concepts: number and operation, space and shape, measurement, pattern and data analysis and probability. Based on the results of this study, children mainly experienced and developed mathematical concepts of ‘number and operation’, ‘space and shape’ and ‘measurement’ while role-playing in a spaceship and a fruit store.
