Neuroprotective Effects of Lithium on NMDA-induced Excitotoxicity in Mouse Cerebrum
Gee-younKwon, Soo-kyungKim 대한생리학회-대한약리학회 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 12 Pages
대한생리학회-대한약리학회 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2006, Vol.10 No.3 1 111-122 (12 pages)
Neuroprotective properties of lithium were evaluated by using in vivo NMDA excitotoxicity model. Systemic injection of NMDA to young mice induced neuronal apoptosis mediated by both TNFR-1 and Fas ligand, and long-term lithium treatment showed noticeable neuroprotection against NMDA-induced excitotoxicity: NMDA-damaged neurons expressed several apoptosis-related gene products such as TNFR-1, Fas ligand, and caspase-3, and these gene expressions were not found in the brain of mice chronically... -

To prove the buffering contribution of mitochondria to the increase of intracellular Ca2+ level ([Ca2+]i) via background nonselective cation channel (background NSCC), we examined whether inhibition of mitochondria by protonophore carbonylcyanide m-chlorophenylhydrazone (CCCP) affects endothelial Ca2+ entry and Ca2+ buffering in freshly isolated rabbit aortic endothelial cells (RAECs). The ratio of fluorescence by fura-2 AM (R340/380) was measured in RAECs. Biological state was checked by... -
Effect of Fluoxetine on the Induction of Long-term Potentiation in Rat Frontal Cortex

a wide variety of psychological diseases. To study the effect of fluoxetine on the induction of LTP, we recorded the field potential in layer II/III of the frontal cortex from 3-wk-old. LTP was induced in horizontal input by theta burst stimulation (TBS). TBS with two-folds intensity of the test stimulation induced LTP, which was blocked by application of D-AP5 (50μM), an NMDA receptor antagonist. Whereas bath application of 5-HT (10μM) inhibited the induction of LTP, treatment with the 5-HT... -

Soluble N-ethylmaleimide-sensitive factor attachment protein receptors (SNARE) proteins, composed of two presynaptic membrane proteins [synaptosomal-associated protein of 25 kDa (SNAP-25) and syntaxin] and a presynaptic vesicular protein [vesicle-associated membrane protein (VAMP)], serve as a core of exocytotic fusion machinery, which can be affected by ischemia. Synaptic protein in core region, striatum and cortex has been shown to alter after focal ischemia, however, little is known in... -
Postischemic Treatment with Aminoguanidine Inhibits Peroxynitrite Production in the Peroxynitrite Production in the Rat Hippocampus Following Transient Forebrain Ischemia
Yun-SikChoi, Yeo-HongYoon, JuEunLee, Kyung-OkCho, SeongYunKim 대한생리학회-대한약리학회 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 5 Pages
대한생리학회-대한약리학회 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2004, Vol.8 No.1 1 1-5 (5 pages)
Transient forebrain ischemia results in the delayed neuronal death in the CA1 area of the hippocampus. The present study was performed to determine effects of aminoguanidine, a selective iNOS inhibitor, on the generation of peroxynitrite and delayed neuronal death occurring in the hippocampus following transient forebrain ischemia. Transient forebrain ischemia was produced in the conscious rats by four-vessel occlusion for 10 min. Treatment with aminoguanidine (100 mg/kg or 200 mg/kg, i.p.) or... -
Acute Effect of Alcohol and Nicotine on 5-Hydroxytryptamine Synthesis and Tryptophan Hydroxylase Expression in Dorsal and Median Raphe of Rats

대한생리학회-대한약리학회 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2003, Vol.7 No.1 2 5-8 (4 pages)
Alcohol abuse and cigarette smoking have been on the rise worldwide and it has been reported that alcohol and nicotine influence serotonergic neuronal activity in the dorsal raphe. Serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine, 5-HT) has been implicated in the pathophysiology of various neuropsychiatric disorders. In the present study, the effects of alcohol and nicotine on the synthesis of 5-HT and the expression of tryptophan hydroxylase (TPH), the rate limiting enzyme of 5-HT synthesis, in the dorsal and... -

mM [Ca2]o but did not show any effect under the nominally Ca2-free condition. Even after the store depletion with 30μM 2,5-di-tert- butylhydroquinone (BHQ) or 30μM ATP, LPC could still increase the [Ca2]i under the condition of 1.5 mM [Ca2]o. The time required to increase [Ca2]i (about 1 minute) was longer than that for ATP-induced [Ca2]i increase (10∼30 seconds). LPC-induced [Ca2]i increase was completely blocked by 1μM La3. Transient... -
The Protective Effect of Melatonin Administration against Adriamycin-induced Cardiotoxicity in Rats
JinHan, ChungheeKim, NariKim, JuheePark, YoungchurlYang, EuiyongKim 대한생리학회-대한약리학회 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 10 Pages
대한생리학회-대한약리학회 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2001, Vol.5 No.4 6 333-342 (10 pages)
Adriamycin is a commonly used chemotherapeutic agent for cancer, including acute leukemia, lymphoma, and a number of solid human tumors. However, recent studies have recognized severe cardiotoxicity after an acute dose, which are likely the result of generation of free radicals and lipid peroxidation. Therefore, the clinical uses of adriamycin have been limited. Melatonin, the pineal gland hormone known for its ability to modulate circardian rhythm, has recently been studied in its several... -

Depolarization of the membrane evoked regenerative potentials with long latencies (1 to 2 s). These potentials had long partial refractory periods (15 to 20 s). They were inhibited by low concentrations of caffeine, perhaps reflecting either depletion of Ca2 from SR or inhibition of InsP3 receptors, by buffering Ca2 to low levels with BAPTA or by depleting Ca2 from SR with CPA. They persisted in the presence of Ca2-sensitive Cl-channel blockers, niflumic acid... -
