Note : Open Access ; A Simple Method for Assessing Severity of Common Root Rot on Barley
The Plant Pathology Journal 3 Pages
12 451-453 (3 pages)
Common root rot caused by Cochliobolus sativus is a serious disease of barley. A simple and reliable method for assessing this disease would enhance our capacity in identifying resistance sources and developing resistant barley cultivars. In searching for such a method, a conidial suspension of C. sativus was dropped onto sterilized elongated subcrown internodes and incubated in sandwich filter paper using polyethylene transparent envelopes. Initial disease symptoms were easily detected after... -
Theobroxide Treatment Inhibits Wild Fire Disease Occurrence in Nicotiana benthamiana by the Overexpression of Defense-related Genes
The Plant Pathology Journal 6 Pages
14 110-115 (6 pages)
Theobroxide, a novel compound isolated from a fungus Lasiodiplodia theobromae, stimulates potato tuber formation and induces flowering of morning glory by initiating the jasmonic acid synthesis pathway. To elucidate the effect of theobroxide on pathogen resistance in plants, Nicotiana benthamiana plants treated with theobroxide were immediately infiltrated with Pseudomonas syringae pv. tabaci. Exogenous application of theobroxide inhibited development of lesion symptoms, and growth of the... -
The Complete Genome Sequence of Southern rice black-streaked dwarf virus Isolated from Vietnam
The Plant Pathology Journal 5 Pages
11 428-432 (5 pages)
We determined the complete genome sequence of a Vietnamese isolate of Southern rice black-streaked dwarf virus (SRBSDV). Whole genome comparisons and phylogenetic analysis showed that the genome of the Vietnamese isolate shared high nucleotide sequence identities of over 97.5% with those of the reported Chinese isolates, confirming a common origin of them. Moreover, the greatest divergence between different SRBSDV isolates was found in the segments S1, S3, S4 and S6, which differs from the... -
Molecular Characterization of Fusarium Graminearum Virus 2 Isolated from Fusarium graminearum Strain 98-8-60
The Plant Pathology Journal 6 Pages
11 285-290 (6 pages)
Fusarium graminearum virus 2 (FgV2) infects Fusarium graminearum strain 98-8-60 and has at least five segments of double-stranded RNAs (dsRNAs), denoted as dsRNA-1 to dsRNA-5. In this study, the genome of FgV2 was sequenced and its phylogenetic relationship with other mycoviruses was analyzed. The lengths of FgV2 dsRNAs 1-5 ranged from 2414 to 3580 base pairs (bp). The 5` and 3` untranslated regions (UTRs) are highly conserved, and each dsRNA segment had 78-105 and 84-306 bp of 5` and 3` UTRs,... -
Development of a 15-day Interval Spraying Program for Controlling Major Apple Diseases
The Plant Pathology Journal 8 Pages
10 439-446 (8 pages)
A fungicidal spray program for effective control of three major apple diseases in Korea (white rot, bitter rot, and Marssonina blotch) was developed. This was based on our previous studies showing that application of ergosterol biosynthesis inhibitors (EBIs) in early or mid-August can eradicate white rot infection in fruit and that some protective fungicides show after-infection activity against white rot. The basic spray program focused on control of white rot, the main target disease, and the... -
Note : Survey on the Occurrence of Apple Diseases in Korea from 1992 to 2000
The Plant Pathology Journal 6 Pages
13 375-380 (6 pages)
In the survey from 1992 to 2000, twenty-eight parasitic diseases were observed in major apple producing areas in Korea. The predominant apple diseases were white rot (Botryosphaeria dothidea), Marssonina blotch (Marssonina mali), Valsa canker (Valsa ceratosperma), Alternaria leaf spot (Alternaria mali), and bitter rot (Collectotrichum gloeosporioides and C. acutatum). Apple scab that reappeared in 1990 after disappearance for 15 years was disappeared again since 1997. A viroid disease (caused by... -
Effect of Bacillus mesonae H20-5 on Fruit Yields and Quality in Protected Cultivation
Sung-Je Yoo, Jeong Woong Kim, Sang Tae Kim, Hang-Yeon Weon, Jaekyeong Song, Mee Kyung Sang 한국식물병리학회 식물병연구 5 Pages
5 84-88 (5 pages)
A variety of microorganisms in rhizosphere affect plant health by plant growth promotion, mitigation of abiotic stresses as well as protection from pathogen attacks. In our previous study, we selected a bacterium, Bacillus mesonae H20-5, for alleviation of salinity stress in tomato plants. In this study, we verified the effect of a liquid formulation of B. mesonae H20-5 (TP-H20-5) on fruit production and phytochemical accumulation including lycopene and polyphenol in cherry tomato and strawberry... -
Development of a Multiplex Reverse Transcription-Polymerase Chain Reaction Assay for the Simultaneous Detection of Three Viruses in Leguminous Plants
Chung Youl Park, Hyun-Geun Min, Hong-Kyu Lee, Rameswor Maharjan, Youngnam Yoon, Su-Heon Lee 한국식물병리학회 식물병연구 5 Pages
15 348-352 (5 pages)
A multiplex reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (mRT-PCR) assay was developed for the detection of Clover yellow vein virus (ClYVV), Peanut mottle virus (PeMoV), and Tomato spotted wilt virus (TSWV), which were recently reported to infect soybean and azuki bean in Korea. Species-specific primer sets were designed for the detection of each virus, and their specificity and sensitivity were tested using mixed primer sets. From among the designed primer sets, two combinations were... -

Chung Youl Park, Jeong-ran Park, Geun-sik Lee, Seung-In Yi, Byeong Hoon Kim, Jung Sik Eom, Som Gyeol Lee, Hong-sup Kim
7 233-236 (4 pages)
A multiplex RT-PCR (mRT-PCR) assay was developed for the detection of the recently reported viruses, Cherry virus A (CVA), Little cherry virus 1 (LChV-1), and Little cherry virus 2 (LChV-2), in cherry plants in Korea. Eight sets of primers were designed for each virus and their specificity was tested by using various combinations of mixed primer sets. From the designed primer sets, one combination was selected and further evaluated to estimate the optimum temperature and detection limits of the...
