Extraction and characterization of lignin from black liquor and preparation of biomass-based activated carbon therefrom
Daeyeon Kim, Jinsil Cheon, Jeonghoon Kim, Daekyun Hwang, Ikpyo Hong, Oh Hyeong Kwon, Won Ho Park, Donghwan Cho 한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 8 Pages
한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 2017, Vol.22 14 81-88 (8 pages)
of attenuated total reflectance- Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and 1H-nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. The extracted lignin was carbonized at different temperatures and then activated with steam at 850oC. The extracted lignin in powder state was transformed into a bulky carbonized lignin due to possible fusion between the lignin particles occurring upon carbonization. The carbonized and then pulverized lignin exhibits brittle surfaces, the increased thermal stability, and the... -
Synthesis and characterization of carbon doped TiO₂ photocatalysts supported on stainless steel mesh by sol-gel method
JO. Tijani, OO. Fatoba, TC. Totito, WD. Roos, LF. Petrik 한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 12 Pages
한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 2017, Vol.22 6 48-59 (12 pages)
morphological characteristics, particle sizes and surface area of the prepared catalyst was investigated. The prepared catalysts were characterized by several analytical methods: high resolution scanning electron microscopy (HRSEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The XRD patterns showed that the supported TiO₂ nanocrystals are typically anatase, polycrystalline and body-centered tetragonal... -
Study of complex electrodeposited thin film with multi-layer graphene-coated metal nanoparticles
Young-Lae Cho, Jung-woo Lee, Chan Park, Young-il Song, Su-Jeong Suh 한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 6 Pages
한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 2017, Vol.21 8 68-73 (6 pages)
We have demonstrated the production of thin films containing multilayer graphene-coated copper nanoparticles (MGCNs) by a commercial electrodeposition method. The MGCNs were produced by electrical wire explosion, an easily applied technique for creating hybrid metal nanoparticles. The nanoparticles had average diameters of 10?120 nm and quasispherical morphologies. We made a complex-electrodeposited copper thin film (CETF) with a thickness of 4.8 μm by adding 300 ppm MGCNs to the electrolyte... -
Synthesize multi-walled carbon nanotubes via catalytic chemical vapour deposition method on Fe-Ni bimetallic catalyst supported on kaolin

한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 2017, Vol.21 5 33-50 (18 pages)
combined effects of the reaction temperature and acetylene flow rate predominantly influenced the MWCNT yield. The N2 adsorption (BET) and TGA analyses reveal high surface areas and thermally stable MWCNTs. The HRTEM/HRSEM micrographs confirm the formation of tangled MWCNTs with a particle size of less than 62 nm. The XRD patterns of the MWCNTs reveal the formation of a typical graphitized carbon. This study establishes the production of MWCNTs from a bi-metallic catalyst supported on kaolin. -
Improving dispersion of multi-walled carbon nanotubes and graphene using a common non-covalent modifier

the polymer-wrapping process. Transmission electron microscopy analysis confirmed the wrapping of the MWCNTs and graphene with PAN layers. The interaction between the graphitic structure and the PAN molecules was examined using proton nuclear magnetic resonance, ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and Raman spectroscopy. The obtained results revealed that the cyano groups of the PAN molecules facilitated adhesion of the PAN... -
Adsorption capability of activated carbon synthesized from coconut shell
Md Shariful Islam, Bee Chin Ang, Samira Gharehkhani, Amalina Binti, Muhammad Afifi 한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 9 Pages
한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 2016, Vol.20 1 1-9 (9 pages)
Activated carbon was synthesized from coconut shells. The Brunauer, Emmett and Teller surface area of the synthesized activated carbon was found to be 1640 m2/g with a pore volume of 1.032 cm3/g. The average pore diameter of the activated carbon was found to be 2.52 nm. By applying the size-strain plot method to the X-ray diffraction data, the crystallite size and the crystal strain was determined to be 42.46 nm and 0.000489897, respectively, which indicate a perfect crystallite structure. The... -
Phenylethynyl-terminated polyimide, exfoliated graphite nanoplatelets, and the composites: an overview
Donghwan Cho, Lawrence T. Drzal 한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 11 Pages
한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 2016, Vol.19 1 1-11 (11 pages)
In efforts to characterize and understand the properties and processing of phenylethynyl-terminated imide (LaRC PETI-5, simply referred to as PETI-5) oligomers and polymers as a high-temperature sizing material for carbon fiber-reinforced polymer matrix composites, PETI-5 imidization and thermal curing behaviors have been extensively investigated based on the phenylethynyl end-group reaction. These studies are reviewed here. In addition, the use of PETI-5 to enhance interfacial adhesion between... -
Molecular approach to hexagonal and cubic diamond nanocrystals
Mudar Ahmed Abdulsattar 한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 6 Pages
한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 2015, Vol.16 No.3 5 192-197 (6 pages)
calculated binding energy per atom shows that wurtzoids are tighter structures than diamondoids. Distribution of angles and bonds manifest the main differences between hexagonal and cubic diamond-type structures. Charge transfer, infrared, nuclear magnetic resonance and ultraviolet-visible spectra are investigated to identify the main spectroscopic differences between hexagonal and cubic structures at the molecular and nanoscale. Natural bond orbital population analysis shows that the bonding of... -
Thermal properties in strong hydrogen bonding systems composed of poly(vinyl alcohol), polyethyleneimine, and graphene oxide
Sua Choi, Duck Kun Hwang and Heon Sang Lee 한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 8 Pages
한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 2014, Vol.15 No.4 8 282-289 (8 pages)
Blends of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA), polyethyleneimine (PEI), and graphene oxide (GO) were prepared by solution casting method. Calorimetric thermal properties of the blends were investigated. The Tgs of PVA/PEI blends were higher than the Tgs of either of the component polymers at low concentrations of PEI. These abnormal increases of Tgs may be due to the negative entropy of mixing which is associated with strong hydrogen bonding between PVA and PEI. The degree of depression of s was not...
