Effects of Anticonvulsants on Acute and Tonic Pains in the Rat
8 Pages
10 97-104 (8 pages)
Different neural substrates have been reported to be implicated in analgesic mechanisms in the acute phasic and the sustained tonic pains. To explore the differential antinociceptive action of diphenylhydantoin (DPH) and carbamazepine (CBZ) on the acute phasic and the tonic pains, changes in tail flick latency, hot plate latency and the formalin-induced nociceptive score were assessed prior to and after intraperitoneal administration of DPH (20 & 40 mg/Kg) and CBZ (20 mg/Kg). In 11 rats, CBZ was... -

transport, suggesting that the TEA self-exchange mechanism was involved at the apical membrane. Sulfhydryl reagents such as {\rho}-chloromercuribenzoic acid (PCMB) and ρ-chloro-mercuribenzene sulfonate (PCMBS) and carboxyl reagents such as N,N -dicyclohexylcarbodiimidem (DCCD) and N-ethoxy-carbonyl-2-ethoxy-1,2-dihydro-quinoline(EEDQ) inhibited the TEA transport at both the basolateral and apical membranes of the OK cell monolayer. These results suggest that OK cell monolayers possess a... -
Enhanced Expression of Angiotensinogen mRNA in Rat Central and Peripheral Tissues Following Hemorrhage
Do, Eun-Ju, Yang, Eun-Kyoung, Kim, Kyung-Soon, Kim, Suk-Hee, Park, Yoon-Yub, Ahn, Dong-Kuk, Park, Jae-Sik, Lee, Won-Jung
8 259-268 (10 pages)
The renin-angiotensin system plays an important role in the regulation of blood pressure and in body fluid homeostasis. There is increasing evidence for generation of endogenous angiotensin II in many organs and for its role in paracrine functions. Studies were designed to investigate whether hemorrhage produces rapid changes in the gene expression of angiotensinogen in peripheral and brain tissues. Wistar rats received saline drinking water for 7 days, were bled at a rate of 3mlkg-1 min-1 for... -
Platelet-Activating Factor Potentiates the Activity of Respiratory Burst and Interleukin-1 in Rat Alveolar Macrophages
8 Pages
7 251-258 (8 pages)
The objective of the present study was to test the effect of platelet-activating factor (PAF) on rat alveolar macrophages. PAF alone did not stimulate superoxide secretion from alveolar macrophages. However, PAF (10-5 M) significantly enhanced phagocytic activator zymosan-induced superoxide secretion from alveolar macrophages. This enhancement of PAF plus zymosan was 30% above the sum of the separate effects of PAF and zymosan. Similarly, PAF 1.3 X (10-5 M) was not a direct stimulant of alveolar... -
Effects of In Vitro Exposure to Silica on Bioactive Mediator Release by Alveolar Macrophages
12 Pages
1 1-12 (12 pages)
Alveolar macrophages play a pivotal role in the pathogenesis of silicosis since the macrophages may release a wide variety of toxic and inflammatory mediators as well as mitogenic growth factors. In the present study, the effects of in vitro exposure to silica on release of various mediator such as reactive oxygen species, platelet activating factor(PAF), and interleukin-1 (IL-1) by alveolar macrophages were examined. First, hydrogen peroxide release from alveolar macrophages was monitored by... -
Production and Characterization of Specific Antibodies to Bombesin
8 Pages
9 91-98 (8 pages)
In order to produce a specific bombesin antiserum far very sensitive radioimmunoassay, synthetic [lys3]-bombesin conjugated to bovine serum albumin was subcutaneously injected into guinea pigs. The conjugation was performed using either carbodiimide or gIutaraldehyde as a coupling agent. The antisera were characterized by analysis of Scatchard and Sips plots. The antiserum LBE 2G/2 raised by repeat injection of the immunogen conjugated with carbodiimide showed the titer of 1 : 188,000, very low... -
The Change of Secretory Activity of the Alveolar Type ll Cell During Acute Alveolar Injury Induced by N-Nitroso-N-Methylurethane
Lee, Young-Man, Bang, In-Sook, Lee, Suck-Kang 8 Pages
7 71-78 (8 pages)
In the animal model of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) induced by N-nitroso-N-methylurethane (NNNMU) the secretory activity of alveolar type H cells during acute alveolar injury was investigated by determining phospholipid and pulmonary surfactant associated proteins in crude surfactant. The mechanism of the secretory change was studied by determination of DNA and RNA levels in the lung tissue. After induction of acute alveolar injury with NNNMU, pulmonary hemorrhage, atelectasis and... -
Effect of Temperature on Dicarboxylate Transport in Plasma Membrane Vesicles of Rabbit Proximal Tubule
6 Pages
11 227-232 (6 pages)
The temperature dependence of Na+-dependent succinate uptake was studied in brush border (BBMV) and basolateral (BLMV) membrane vesicles isolated from the rabbit kidney cortex. The succinate uptake was markedly altered by temperature in a similar fashion in both membranes. The temperature dependence was characterized by a nonlinear Arrhenius plot with a break point at 22 and 25℃ for BBMV and BLMV, respectively. The activation energy was 3.91 and 17.09 kcal/mole at above and below the break... -
Cardiovascular Neurons Mediating Somatosympathetic Reflex in Rostral Ventrolateral Medulla
14 Pages
7 185-198 (14 pages)
The rostral ventrolateral medulla (RVLM) includes vasopressor neurons, which transmit activation signals to the intermediolateral nucleus (IML) of the spinal cord, where the preganglionic sympathetic nucleus is located, to raise arterial blood pressure (BP). However, controversy exists as to the possible depressor area in the RVLM and the pathway involved. The present study persued evidence far the location of depressor neurons and the pathway by simultaneously observing changes in BP and the... -
Effect of Various Divalent Ions on the Calcium Current of Adrenal Medullary Chromaffin Cells in the Rat
10 Pages
2 113-122 (10 pages)
It is well known that chromaffin cells of adrenal medulla secrete catecholamine in response to sympathetic nerve activation and the influx of Ca2+ through the voltage dependent Ca2+ channels (VDCC) in the cell membrane do a major role in this secretory process. In this study, we explored the effect of divalent cations on VDCC of rat chromaffin cells. Rat (Sprague-Dawley rat, 150-250 gm) chromaffin cells were isolated and cultured. Standard giga seal, whole cell recording techniques were employed...
