Bisphenol A (BPA), a ubiquitous environmental contaminant, has been shown to cause developmental toxicity and carcinogenic effects. BPA may have physiological activity through estrogen receptor (ER) -α and -β, which are expressed in the central nervous system. We previously found that exposure of BPA to immature mice resulted in behavioral alternation, suggesting that overexposure of BPA could be neurotoxic. In this study, we further investigated the molecular neurotoxic mechanisms of BPA. BPA... -

The remarkable potential of embryonic stem (ES) cells is their ability to develop into many different cell types. ES cells make it possible to treat patients by transplanting specialized healthy cells derived from them to repair damaged and diseased cells or tissues, known as “stem cell therapy”. However, the issue of immunocompatibility is one of considerable significance in ES cell transplantation. One approach to overcome transplant rejection of human ES (hES) cells is to derive hES cells... -

with rAcORF873, were prepared by immunizing mice with a recombinant fusion protein expressed in Escherichia coli. Immunoblot analyses with the antibodies revealed a major protein band with a molecular mass of 108-kDa in both MDV2-infected chick embryo fibroblasts (CEF) and rAcORF873- infected Sf9 cells. By indirect immunofluorescence analyses using monoclonal antibody, the authentic ORF873 protein was localized in the cytoplasm of MDV2- infected CEF cells. The monoclonal and polyclonal sera,... -
The effects of cyclophosphamide treatment on the pathogenesis of subgroup J avian leukosis virus (ALV-J) infection in broiler chickens with Marek's disease virus exposure

Studies were performed to determine the effects of Bcell suppression on the pathogenesis of Subgroup J avian leukosis virus (ALV-J) in broiler chickens. Neonatal chickens were treated with cyclophosphamide (CY) or PBS, and then infected with ALV-J (ADOL-7501) at 2 weeks of age. CY treatment induced B cell specific immunosuppression throughout the experiment confirmed by decreased bursal weight, intact lymphocyte mitogenetic activity stimulated by Con A and increased relative subpopulation of... -
Immunomodulatory and antitumor effects in vivo by the cytoplasmic fraction of Lactobacillus casei and Bifidobacterium longum

The immunomodulatory and antitumor effects of lactic acid bacteria (LABs) were investigated. Cytoplasmic fraction of Lactobacillus acidophilus, Lactobacillus casei and Bifidobacterium longum were tested for the antiproliferative activity in vitro to SNUC2A, SNU1, NIH/3T3 and Jurkat cell lines by crystal violet assay. All cytoplasmic fraction suppressed proliferation of tumor cells, though L. casei and B. longum were more effective. From these results, cytoplasmic fraction of L. casei and B.... -
Effects of cyclosporin A treatment on the pathogenesis of avian leukosis virus subgroup J infection in broiler chickens with Marek’s disease virus exposure

at 2 weeks of age. The effects of viral infection were compared to uninfected birds in same treatment group. Intramuscular injection of CSP induced significant T-cell specific immunosuppression determined by decreased cutaneous basophilic hypersensitivity response and decreased lymphocyte mitogenic activity using concanavalin A. Most of the chickens examined had Marek’s disease virus infection prior to 3 weeks of age. The percentage of antibody-positive birds and antibody titers were similar in... -
Effect of Reproductive Status on In Vitro Developmental Competence of Bovine Oocytes

poorest embryonic development (39.8%: p<0.05). Majority of the embryos from all reproductive phases showed a developmental arrest around 8-cell stage. Although the developmental competence of oocytes from pregnant and anestrus animals was lower than that from the other reproductive stages, they could be potentially used as oocyte donors. Long term, in vitro embryo culture without medium freshening or change was hypothesized to have caused the failure to overcome the 8-cell block to development. -
Immunohistochemical Localization of Nerve Growth Factor,Glial Fibrillary Acidic Protein and Ciliary Neurotrophic Factor in Mesencephalon, Rhombencephalon, and Spinal Cord of Developing Mongolian Gerbil

The distribution of the nerve growth factor (NGF), the glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) and the ciliary neurotrohic factor (CNTF) was performed in coronal sections of the mesencephalon, rhombencephalon and spinal cord in the developing Mongolian gerbils. Generally, NGF specifically recognizes neurons with the NGF receptor, whereas GFAP does the glia, and CNTF does the motor neurons. The receptor expression was examined separately in gerbils between embryonic days 15 (E15) and postnatal... -

For parthenogenetic activation as a model system of nuclear transfer, microinjection and electroporation as activation treatments in bovine metaphase II oocytes were administered to each of three groups as follows: control group (treatments with Ca2+, Mg2+ -free PBS+100 micro M EGTA), IP3 group (control+25 micro M IP3) and IP3+ ryanodine group (control+25 micro M IP3+10 mM ryanodine). In experiments using microinjection, no significant differences were observed between any of the developmental... -
Teratological effect of 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD): induction of cleft palate in the ddY and C57BL/6 mouse

2,3,7,8-Tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD), a highly toxic halogenated aromatic hydrocarbon, is a teratogen to induce cleft palate when exposed during the pregnancy. There are inter-strain differences in the sensitivity to cleft palate induced by TCDD and other chemicals including polychlorinated terphenyls (PCTs). The C57BL/6 mouse and the ddY mouse had been shown to be different in the induction of cleft palate following the treatment of PCTs, which attempts us to evaluate the TCDD-induced...
