2014년 우리나라 3대 사망원인은 암, 심장질환 및 뇌혈관질환으로, 각 사망률(인구 10만 명당)은 암 150.9명, 심장질환 52.4명, 뇌혈관질환 48.2명으로 주요 사망원인 2, 3위를 심뇌혈관질환이 차지하고 있다. 이에 심뇌혈관 질환에 대한 예방활동이 지속적으로 필요한 상황이며, 이를 위해서는 심뇌혈관질환의 위험인자 관리가 중요하다. 심뇌혈관질환의 주요 위험인자는 고혈압, 당뇨병, 이상지질혈증, 비만 등이며, 한국인의 심혈관계 질환의 위험인자도 국외에서 보고된 위험인자와 유사하였다.
