Graphene accelerates osteoblast attachment and biomineralization
Jia Ren, Xiaogang Zhang, Yao Chen 한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 6 Pages
한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 2017, Vol.22 5 42-47 (6 pages)
In this paper, the in vitro biocompatibility of graphene film (GF) with osteoblasts was evaluated through cell adhesion, viability, alkaline phosphatase activity, F-actin and vinculin expressions, versus graphite paper as a reference material. The results showed that MG-63 cells exhibited stronger cell adhesion, better proliferation and viability on GF, and osteoblasts cultured on GF exhibited vinculin expression throughout the cell body. The rougher and wrinkled surface morphology, higher... -
Green synthesis of fluorescent carbon dots from carrot juice for in vitro cellular imaging
Yang Liu, Yanan Liu, Mira Park, Soo-Jin Park, Yifan Zhang, Md Rashedunnabi Akanda, Byung-Yong Park, Hak Yong Kim 한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 7 Pages
한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 2017, Vol.21 7 61-67 (7 pages)
We report the use of carrot, a new and inexpensive biomaterial source, for preparing high quality carbon dots (CDs) instead of semi-conductive quantum dots for bioimaging application. The as-derived CDs possessing down and up-conversion photoluminescence features were obtained from carrot juice by commonly used hydrothermal treatment. The corresponding physiochemical and optical properties were investigated by electron microscopy, fluorescent spectrometry, and other spectroscopic methods. The... -
KOH-activated graphite nanofibers as CO2 adsorbents
Hui Yuan, Long-Yue Meng, Soo-Jin Park 한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 5 Pages
한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 2016, Vol.19 12 99-103 (5 pages)
Porous carbons have attracted much attention for their novel application in gas storage. In this study, porous graphite nano-fiber (PGNFs)-based graphite nano fibers (GNFs) were prepared by KOH activation to act as adsorbents. The GNFs were activated with KOH by changing the GNF/KOH weight ratio from 0 through 5 at 900°C. The effects of the GNF/ KOH weight ratios on the pore structures were also addressed with scanning electron microscope and N2 adsorption/desorption measurements. We found that... -
Pitch-based carbon fibers from coal tar or petroleum residue under the same processing condition
Jiyoung Kim, Ui-Su Im, Byungrok Lee, Dong-Hyun Peck, Seong-Ho Yoon, Doo-Hwan Jung 한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 7 Pages
한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 2016, Vol.19 9 72-78 (7 pages)
pyrolysis fuel oil (PFO), slurry oil, and coal tar were simply filtered to eliminate the solid impurities, the characteristics of the raw materials were evaluated by elemental analysis, 13C nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometer, matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometer (MALDI-TOF-MS), and so on. Spinnable pitches were prepared for melt-spinning carbon fiber through a simple distillation under strong nitrogen flow, and further vacuum distillation to obtain a... -
Carbon rich fly ash and their nanostructures
Numan Salah, Sami S. Habib, Zishan H. Khan, Ahmed Alshahrie, Adnan Memic, Attieh A. Al-ghamdi 한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 9 Pages
한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 2016, Vol.19 3 23-31 (9 pages)
Carbon rich fly ash was recently reported to have compositions that are ideal for use as a precursor and catalyst for carbon nanotube growth. This fly ash powder is mostly composed of pure carbon, predominantly present as sp2. In this work, the effect of sonication time on the morphology and structural properties of carbon rich fly ash particles is reported. The obtained results show that ultrasound treatment is an effective tool for producing ultrafine particles/fragments with higher porosity,... -

Microwave-assisted pretreatment technologies for the conversion of lignocellulosic biomass to sugars and ethanol: a review
Pradeep Puligundla, Sang-Eun Oh, Chulkyoon Mok 한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 10 Pages
한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 2016, Vol.17 No.1 1 1-10 (10 pages)
Lignocellulosic biomass conversion to biofuels such as ethanol and other value-added bio-products including activated carbons has attracted much attention. The development of an efficient, cost-effective, and eco-friendly pretreatment process is a major challenge in lignocellulosic biomass to biofuel conversion. Although several modern pretreatment technologies have been introduced, few promising technologies have been reported. Microwave irradiation or microwave-assisted methods (physical and... -

한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 2015, Vol.16 No.4 2 233-240 (8 pages)
Electrochemical synthesis was employed to prepare a novel hydroxyapatite/graphene (HAP/ Gr) composite powder suitable for medical applications as a hard tissue implant (scaffold). The synthesis was performed in a homogeneous dispersion containing Na2H2EDTA·2H2O, NaH2PO4 and CaCl2 with a Ca/EDTA/PO4 3? concentration ratio of 0.25/0.25/0.15M, along with 0.01 wt% added graphene nanosheets, at a current density of 137 mA cm?2 and pH value of 9.0. The field emission scanning electron microscopy and... -
Manufacturing and characteristics of PAN-based composite carbon fibers containing cellulose particles
Jee-Woo Yang, Da Young Jin, Ji Eun Lee, Seung Goo Lee, Won Ho Park 한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 8 Pages
한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 2015, Vol.16 No.3 7 203-210 (8 pages)
This study fabricated low thermal conductive polyacrylonitrile (PAN)-based carbon fibers containing cellulose particles while maintaining their mechanical properties. The high thermal conductivity of carbon fibers limits their application as a high temperature insulator in various systems such as an insulator for propulsion parts in aerospace or missile systems. By controlling process parameters such as the heat treatment temperature of the cellulose particles and the amount of cellulose added,... -
Molecular approach to hexagonal and cubic diamond nanocrystals
Mudar Ahmed Abdulsattar 한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 6 Pages
한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 2015, Vol.16 No.3 5 192-197 (6 pages)
In the present work, we propose a molecule (C14H14) that can be used as a building block of hexagonal diamond-type crystals and nanocrystals, including wurtzite structures. This molecule and its combined blocks are similar to diamondoid molecules that are used as building blocks of cubic diamond crystals and nanocrystals. The hexagonal part of this molecule is included in the C12 central part of this molecule. This part can be repeated to increase the ratio of hexagonal to cubic diamond and...
