Cellular effects of ethanol in YD-15 tongue carcinoma cells were assessed by MTT assay, caspase activity assay, Western blotting and flow cytometry. Ethanol inhibited the growth and proliferation of YD-15 cells in a dose- and time-dependent manner in an MTT assay. On the other hand, the levels of AUF-1 and nucleolin, transacting factors for ARE in the 3'UTR of bcl-2 mRNA, were not significantly affected by the decrease in hnRNP L, suggesting that a disturbance in the quantitative balance between these transacting factors is not likely to interfere with the effect of hnRNP L. Collectively, the findings indicate that the decay of bcl-2 mRNA does not appear to be directly controlled by hnRNP L in vivo. -

sed significantly upon NDEA-induced oxidative stress in both the control and CoQ10 groups with the effect being less in the CoQ10 group. Catalase activity decreased significantly in both the control and CoQ10 groups treated with NDEA, again with the effect being less in the CoQ10 group. The lesser effect on superoxide dismutase and catalase in the NDEA-treated CoQ10 group is indicative of the protective effect CoQ10. Thus, CoQ10 can offer useful protection against NDEA-induced oxidative stress. -

than that of single occlusion group, and the onset time of glutamate release in the second ischemic episode of repeated occlusion group was delayed compared to the first ischemic episode which was similar to that of single 10 min ischemic episode. These results suggested that repeated transient occlusion induces less glutamate release from neuronal cell than single occlusion, and the delayed onset time of glutamate release is attributed to endogeneous protective mechanism of ischemic tolerance. -
