An overview of calf diarrhea - infectious etiology, diagnosis, and intervention
Yong-il Cho, Kyoung-Jin Yoon* 대한수의학회 Journal of Veterinary Science 17 Pages
1 1-17 (17 pages)
Calf diarrhea is a commonly reported disease in young animals, and still a major cause of productivity and economic loss to cattle producers worldwide. In the report of the 2007 National Animal Health Monitoring System for U.S. dairy, half of the deaths among unweaned calves was attributed to diarrhea. Multiple pathogens are known or postulated to cause or contribute to calf diarrhea development. Other factors including both the environment and management practices influence disease severity or... -
Development of a novel enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay to detect anti-IgG against swine hepatitis E virus
Won Jung Lee, Min Kyoung Shin, Seung Bin Cha, Han Sang Yoo 대한수의학회 Journal of Veterinary Science 6 Pages
13 467-472 (6 pages)
E virus (HEV) is widespread throughout pigs in both developing and industrialized countries. This virus is an important zoonotic agent and a public concern worldwide. Infected pigs are asymptomatic, so diagnosing swine HEV relies on detection of the virus or antibodies against the virus. However, several obstacles need to be overcome for effective and practical serological diagnosis. In this study, we developed an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) that used a purified recombinant capsid... -
Expression of E-cadherin in pig kidney
Su-Youn Lee, Sun M. Han, Ji-Eun Kim, Ku-Yong Chung, Ki-Hwan Han 대한수의학회 Journal of Veterinary Science 6 Pages
2 381-386 (6 pages)
in pig kidney. Kidney tissues from pigs were processed for light and electron microscopy immunocytochemistry, and immunoblot analysis. E-cadhedrin bands of the same size were detected by immunoblot of samples from rat and pig kidneys. In pig kidney, strong E-cadherin expression was observed in the basolateral plasma membrane of the tubular epithelial cells. E-cadherin immunolabeling was not detected in glomeruli or blood vessels of pig kidney. Double-labeling results demonstrated that E-cadherin... -
Emergence of virulent pseudorabies virus infection in Northern China
Rui Wu, Chaoyong Bai, Jinzhong Sun, Shengke Chang, Xuke Zhang 대한수의학회 Journal of Veterinary Science 3 Pages
17 363-365 (3 pages)
Our investigation was conducted in order to verify a recent severe epidemic at several swine farms in northern China that indicated a newly emerging disease. Evidence confirmed that the epidemic was caused by a virulent Pseudorabies virus infection in swine herds. -
Development of in vitro produced porcine embryos according to serum types as macromolecule
Jungmin Son, Don Buddika Oshadi Malaweera, Eunsong Lee, Sangtae Shin, Jongki Cho 대한수의학회 Journal of Veterinary Science 7 Pages
11 315-321 (7 pages)
This study was conducted to establish an in vitro maturation (IVM) system by selection of efficient porcine serum during porcine in vitro production. To investigate the efficient porcine serum (PS), different types of PS [newborn pig serum, prepubertal gilt serum (PGS), estrus sow serum, and pregnancy sow serum] were used to supplement IVM media with or without gonadotrophin (GTH) and development rates of parthenogenetic activation (PA) and in vitro fertilization (IVF) embryos were then... -
Dissimilarity of ccrAB gene sequences between methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus epidermidis and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus among bovine isolates in Korea
Young Kyung Park, Young Hwan Paik, Jang Won Yoon, Lawrence K. Fox, Sun Young Hwang, Yong Ho Park 대한수의학회 Journal of Veterinary Science 7 Pages
9 299-305 (7 pages)
The sequences of the ccrAB genes from bovine-, canine- and chicken-originating methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus (S.) epidermidis (MRSE) and bovine methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus (S.) aureus (MRSA) were compared to investigate the frequency of intra-species horizontal transfer of the staphylococcal cassette chromosome mec (SCCmec) complex. Nineteen MRSE strains were isolated from bovine milk, chickens, and dogs, and their genetic characteristics were investigated by multilocus sequence... -
Expression of verocytotoxic Escherichia coli antigens in tobacco seeds and evaluation of gut immunity after oral administration in mouse model
Luciana Rossi, Alessia Di Giancamillo, Serena Reggi, Cinzia Domeneghini, Antonella Baldi, Vittorio Sala, Vittorio Dell'Orto, Ann 대한수의학회 Journal of Veterinary Science 8 Pages
5 263-270 (8 pages)
Verocytotoxic Escherichia (E.) coli strains are responsible for swine oedema disease, which is an enterotoxaemia that causes economic losses in the pig industry. The production of a vaccine for oral administration in transgenic seeds could be an efficient system to stimulate local immunity. This study was conducted to transform tobacco plants for the seed-specific expression of antigenic proteins from a porcine verocytotoxic E. coli strain. Parameters related to an immunological response and... -
Genetic diversity of porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus in Korea
Eun-Jin Choi, Chang-Hee Lee, Jae-Young Song, Hee-Jong Song, Choi-Kyu Park, Byounghan Kim, Yeun-Kyung Shin* 대한수의학회 Journal of Veterinary Science 10 Pages
2 115-124 (10 pages)
The high genetic diversity of porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) has been an obstacle to developing an effective vaccine for porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS). This study was performed to assess the degree of genetic diversity among PRRSVs from Korean pig farms where wasting and respiratory syndrome was observed from 2005 to 2009. Samples from 786 farms were tested for the presence of PRRSV using reverse transcription PCR protocol. A total of 117 farms... -

Monika Moravkova, Jiri Lamka, Michal Slany, Ivo Pavlik* 대한수의학회 Journal of Veterinary Science 4 Pages
15 99-102 (4 pages)
IS901 RFLP analysis of 36 Mycobacterium avium subsp. avium (MAA) isolates from 15 pheasants (Phasianus colchicus) and two goshawks (Accipiter gentilis) from four pheasant farms was performed. Using this method, six different IS901 RFLP types (E, F, G, M, Q, and V) were identified. The distribution of IS901 RFLP profiles was tightly linked to individual flocks. Matching IS901 RFLP profiles observed in the present study indicate MAA transmission between pheasants and goshawks in the same locality.... -
Protection of chickens against infectious bronchitis virus with a multivalent DNA vaccine and boosting with an inactivated vaccine
Fang Yan*, Yujun Zhao, Yongting Hu, Jianyang Qiu, Wenxin Lei, Wenhui Ji, Xuying Li, Qian Wu, Xiumin Shi, Zhong Li 대한수의학회 Journal of Veterinary Science 8 Pages
8 53-60 (8 pages)
The protective efficacy of DNA plasmids encoding avian infectious bronchitis virus (IBV) S1, N, or M protein was investigated in chickens. Chickens were inoculated monovalently (with plasmid pVAX1-16S1, pVAX1-16M, or pVAX1-16N alone) or multivalently (combination of the three different plasmids, pVAX1-16S1/M/N). A prime-boost immunization protocol against IBV was developed. Chickens were immunized with the multivalent DNA vaccine twice and then boosted with an inactivated vaccine once. Antibody...
