Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 32 Pages
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 2011, Vol.5 No.1 5 91-122 (32 pages)
more child-centred teaching with an emphasis on play. In promoting preschools to adopt the play curriculum the government has introduced nationwide training for all preschool teachers and principals. In the past, the approach to education has been a meritocratic system and this has strongly reflected and shaped Singapore culture and way of life. The dramatic educational change means a shift from years of rigorous academic rote learning to a play curriculum. This will not be unproblematic. A... -
Emotion Socialization by Early Childhood Educators: Conceptual Models from Psychology
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 22 Pages
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 2011, Vol.5 No.1 2 23-44 (22 pages)
Early childhood educators play an important role in helping children to understand and to express emotions. In this paper we highlight the small number of studies in the U.S. concerning the goals and strategies of early childhood educators with respect to emotion socialization, and provide personal observations of emotion socialization practices in two preschools in Hong Kong (PRC) and Memphis (USA). We then propose a conceptual model that integrates LeVine’s work in cultural anthropology with... -

Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 22 Pages
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 2010, Vol.4 No.2 4 77-98 (22 pages)
This critical analysis essay investigates the recent trends and issues of Early Childhood Education (ECE) in Singapore by triggering a cosmopolitan outlook for the future. Trends are introduced by reviewing recent government initiatives. Issues are examined by analyzing and incorporating the related scholarly studies and my exploration of teachers’ reflections about such changes. The critical analysis is made with multiple discourses to interpret trends and issues in Singapore. These trends... -
Risk, Challenge and Safety in Outdoor Play: Pedagogical and Regulatory Tensions
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 22 Pages
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 2010, Vol.4 No.1 1 3-24 (22 pages)
Early Childhood services are becoming an increasingly significant part of children’s lives. As such they offer vital opportunities for children to engage in physically challenging active play in a safe and secure environment. However, in an increasingly ‘risk averse’ society an over-emphasis on safety has seen such play opportunities eroded. This qualitative study explored Early Childhood practitioners’ (n = 17) beliefs about risk-taking and their provision of ‘risky’ play opportunities in... -

Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 19 Pages
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 2009, Vol.3 No.2 3 53-71 (19 pages)
This study explored how children’s drawings reveal prior knowledge Filipino children have for science words commonly found in grade I science textbooks before entering grade I. They were asked to draw and explain their concepts. Chi square tests and ANOVA tests were made to find patterns of conceptions considering the variables in the study. The children showed beginnings of awareness, especially in words related to their direct experiences. Most children could not give a precise definition of... -

Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 2008, Vol.2 No.1 5 83-98 (16 pages)
In an effort to implement the recommendations of the 1 994 Revised National Policy on Education (RNPE) (Republic of Botswana, 1994) and to fulfill the aspirations of Vision 201 6 (Republic of Botswana, 1 997), Early Childhood Care and Education (ECC&E) Policy was released in 2001 in Botswana. Singapore Preschool Teachers' Responses to the Introduction of A Framework for a Kindergarten Curriculum in the Context of 3 Preschool Settings
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 27 Pages
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 2008, Vol.2 No.1 4 55-81 (27 pages)
The teachers in this pilot study welcomed the curriculum framework but had reservations about it. For them, the three main issues were limitations in funding and resources to implement the Framework, a need for training, and the expectations of parents for a more formal approach to the curriculum. The cultural and economic context in which the preschools are located seem to have some influence on the teachers' ability to implement the Framework and on how the curriculum is delivered to children. -
