최근 의학의 발달과 경제 수준의 향상으로 인한 사망률 감소는 평균수명을 연장시켰고, 이로 인한 노인인구 비율의 증가는 주요한 사회문제로 대두 되고 있다. 우리나라 노인 인구는 지난 2000년 65 세 이상 인구비율이 7.2%에 이르러 “고령화 사회” 에 들어섰으며, 향후 2018년에는 이 비율이 14.3% 가 되어 “고령사회”에 진입하고, 2026년에는 20.8% 가 되어 “초(超) 고령사회”에 도달할 것이라고 전 망하고 있다(통계청, 2006).
