The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 1999, Vol.3 No.6 9 605-613 (9 pages)
The purpose of the present study was to evaluate cardiovascular regulation during passive standing (PS) after ethanol ingestion by spectral analysis of heart rate variability (HRV) in flushed and nonflushed subjects. Of 24 young male subjects, 8 belonged to flushed group (F) and 16 to nonflushed group (NF). Two sessions of 10-min PS were performed before and after ethanol (0.5 g/kg) ingestion. Powers of R-R interval variability in very low frequency (VLF, 0∼0.05 Hz), low frequency (LF,... -
The Transfection of Caldesmon DNA into Primary Cultured Rat Aortic Vascular Smooth Muscle
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 7 Pages
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 1999, Vol.3 No.6 8 597-603 (7 pages)
Caldesmon (CaD), one of microfilament-associated proteins, plays a key role in microfilament assembly in mitosis. We have investigated the effects of overexpression of the high molecular weight isoform of CaD (h-CaD) on the physiology of vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs). Rat aortic VSMCs were stably transfected with plasmids carrying a full length human h-CaD cDNA under control of cytomegalovirus promoter. The majority of the overexpressed h-CaD appears to be localized predominantly on... -
Effect of C1 Esterase Inhibitor on the Cardiac Dysfunction Following Ischemia and Reperfusion in the Isolated Perfused Rat Heart
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 8 Pages
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 1999, Vol.3 No.6 6 579-586 (8 pages)
Complement-mediated neutrophil activation has been hypothesized to be an important mechanism of reperfusion injury. It has been proposed that C1 esterase inhibitor (C1 INH) may prevent the complement- dependent activation of polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMNs) that occurs within postischemic myocardium. Therefore, The effect of C1 INH was examined in neutrophil dependent isolated perfused rat heart model of ischemia (I) (20 min) and reperfusion (R) (45 min). Administration of C1 INH (5 mg/Kg)... -

This study evaluated the effects of PKC activation using phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate (PMA) and PKC inhibition using the isoquinoline sulfomide derivative H-7 on hemodynamics and glucoregulation in the isolated perfused rat liver. Livers were isolated from fed male Holtzman rats and perfused with Krebs Ringer bicarbonate solution under a constant flow of 50 ml/min at 35oC. Portal vein pressure, glucose and lactate concentrations in the medium and oxygen consumption rates were continuously... -
Effect of Cytokines and bFGF on the Osteoclast Differentiation Induced by 1α,25-(OH)2D3 in Primary Murine Bone Marrow Cultures

Bone is a complex tissue in which resorption and formation continue throughout life. The bone tissue contains various types of cells, of which the bone forming osteoblasts and bone resorbing osteoclasts are mainly responsible for bone remodeling. Periodontal disease represents example of abnormal bone remodeling. Osteoclasts are multinucleated cells present only in bone. It is believed that osteoclast progenitors are hematopoietic origin, and they are recruited from hematopoietic tissues such... -
Effect of Ethanol on Na+-Pi Uptake in Opossum Kidney Cells Role of Membrane Fluidization and Reactive Oxygen Species

The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 1999, Vol.3 No.5 10 529-538 (10 pages)
This study was undertaken to examine the effect of ethanol on Na-dependent phosphate (Na-Pi) uptake in opossum kidney (OK) cells, an established renal proximal tubular cell line. Ethanol inhibited Na-dependent component of phosphate uptake in a dose-dependent manner with I50 of 8.4%, but it did not affect Na-independent component. Similarly, ethanol inhibited Na-dependent uptakes of glucose and amino acids (AIB, glycine, alanine, and leucine). Microsomal... -
Physiological and Pharmacological Characterization of Glutamate and GABA Receptors in the Retina
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 9 Pages
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 1999, Vol.3 No.5 2 461-469 (9 pages)
Glutamate and γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) are major excitatory and inhibitory neurotransmitters in the vertebrate retina, respectively. Using the whole-cell patch clamp technique and a rapid solution changer, glutamate and GABA receptors have been extensively investigated in carp retina. Glutamate receptors on both horizontal and amacrine cells may be an AMPA preferring subtype, which predominantly consists of flop splice variants. GABAA and GABAC receptors coexist in bipolar cells and they... -
Different Mechanisms for K+-Induced Relaxation in Various Arteries
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 11 Pages

[K]o can be increased under a variety of conditions including subarachnoid hemorrhage. The increase of [K]o in the range of 5∼15 mM may affect tensions of blood vessels and cause relaxation of agonist-induced precontracted vascular smooth muscle (K-induced relaxation). In this study, effect of the increase in extracellular K concentration on the agonist-induced contractions of various arteries including resistant arteries of rabbit was examined, using home-made... -
Role of Ca2+ in the Stimulation of Glucose Transport by Insulin in Adipocytes
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 8 Pages
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 1999, Vol.3 No.3 14 357-364 (8 pages)
CaCl2 from the incubation medium significantly reduced, but did not abolish, insulin-stimulated 2-deoxy glucose (2-DG) uptake. Pre-loading adipocytes with intracellular Ca2 chelator, 5,5'-dimethyl bis (o-aminophenoxy)ethane-N,N,N'N' tetraacetic acetoxymethyl ester (5,5'-dimethyl BAPTA/AM) completely blocked the stimulation. Insulin raised intracellular Ca2 concentration ([Ca2]i) about 1.7 times the basal level of 72⁑5 nM, and 5,5'-dimethyl BAPTA/AM kept it constant at... -
