(GCDC), up to 5 hours. After 5 hours incubation with 400 μM GCDC, lactate dehydrogenase released significantly. Cell viability, quantitated in propidium iodide stained cells concomitant with fluoresceindiacetate was decreased time- and dose-dependently. Most nuclei with condensed chromatin and shrunk cytoplasm were heavily labelled time- and dose-dependently by a positive TUNEL reaction. These findings suggest that both apoptosis and necrosis are involved in hepatocytes injury caused by GCDC. -
Hemorrhage- and Restraint-induced Analgesia in Male and Female Conscious Rats
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 9 Pages
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 1999, Vol.3 No.6 3 555-563 (9 pages)
It is well known that stress induces analgesia. This study was designed to demonstrate the stress-induced analgesia by employing hemorrhage and restraint and to investigate its mechanism and sex difference. The degree of pain was assessed by measuring the magnitude of jaw opening reflex produced by a noxious electrical stimulation in the dental pulp and by measuring the latency to withdraw the tail from a heat ray. Restraint showed an antinociceptive response. A significant increase in pain... -
Electroencephalographic Correlation Dimension Changes with Depth of Halothane
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 9 Pages
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 1999, Vol.3 No.5 5 491-499 (9 pages)
This study was designed to evaluate the efficacy of dynamic parameters, such as correlation dimension D2, by comparing spectral electroencephalographic (EEG) parameters. These parameters are used to estimate the depth of halothane anesthesia as defined by the presence of body movement in response to a tail clamp. Six rats were used and each of them was exposed to halothane sequentially at the concentrations of 0%, 0.5%, 1.0% and 1.5% for 30 min. A tail clamp was applied every five min and the... -
The Enhancement of Endotoxin-Induced Nitric Oxide Production by Elevation of Glucose Concentration in Macrophage
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 8 Pages
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 1999, Vol.3 No.4 10 447-454 (8 pages)
The production of nitric oxide (NO) and the expression of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) are known to be modulated by a variety of factors. Recent study showed that endotoxin-induced NO synthesis and iNOS expression were greatly enhanced by elevation of extracellular glucose concentration in murine macrophages. Although this was suggested to be due to the activation of protein kinase C (PKC) via sorbitol pathway, there was lack of evidence for this speculation. This study was performed... -
Electroencephalographic Effects of Chlorpromazine in Rats
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 6 Pages
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 1999, Vol.3 No.3 2 245-250 (6 pages)
The effects of an antipsychotic, chlorpromazine, on the electroencephalogram (EEG) were observed while rats were awake but immobile. The time course and the dose-dependency of the EEG changes were examined. The method of the power spectrum analysis was used to examine the EEG changes by the drug. The bands were divided into delta (1∼3.5 Hz), theta (3.5∼8 Hz), alpha (8∼13 Hz), beta1 (13∼21 Hz), beta2 (21∼30 Hz) and gamma (30∼50 Hz). In rats, the low dose of chlropromazine (1 mg/kg, i.p.)... -
The Roles of Arachidonic Acid and Calcium in the Angiotensin II-induced Inhibition of Na+ Uptake in Renal Proximal Tubule Cells

proximal tubule: low doses of ANG II increase the Na transport, whereas high doses of ANG II inhibit it. However, the mechanisms of high dose ANG II-induced inhibition on Na uptake are poorly understood. Thus the aim of the present study was to investigate signal transduction pathways involved in the ANG II-induced inhibition of Na uptake in the primary cultured rabbit renal proximal tubule cells (PTCs) in hormonally defined serum-free medium. ANG II (109 M)-induced... -
Role of Protein Kinases on NF-κB Activation and Cell Death in Bovine Cerebral Endothelial Cells
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 8 Pages
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 1999, Vol.3 No.1 2 11-18 (8 pages)
serum-deprivation-induced BCEC death, low doses of TNFα showed a protective effect. TNFα induced NF-κB activation within 4 h in serum-deprivation. PTK inhibitors (herbimycin A and genistein) and PKC inhibitor (calphostin C) prevented NF-κB activation stimulated by TNFα. Likewise, these inhibitors prevented the protective effect of TNFα. In contrast to TNFα-stimulated NF-κB activity, basal NF-κB activity of BCECs in media containing serum was suppressed only by calphostin C, but not by... -
Moderate Elevation of Extracellular K+ Concentration Induces Vasorelaxation in Isolated Rat, Rabbit and Human Cerebral Arteries Role of Na Pump and Ba-Sensitive Process
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 10 Pages

Cerebral blood vessels relax when extracellular K concentrations ([K])e are elevated moderately (2∼15 mM, K-induced vasorelaxation). We have therefore studied the underlying mechanism for this K- induced vasorelaxation in the isolated middle cerebral arteries (MCAs). The effects of ouabain and Ba2 on K-induced vasorelaxation were examined to determine the role of sodium pump and/or Ba-sensitive process (possibly, inward rectifier K current) in the... -
Effects of Neonatal Footshock Stress on Glucocorticoid and 5- HT2A/2C Receptor Bindings and Exploratory Behavior
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 9 Pages
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 1998, Vol.2 No.6 4 677-685 (9 pages)
To investigate the effects of neonatal stress on behavior and neurochemistry, rats were exposed to the footshock stress on postnatal day (PND) 14 or PNDs 14 and 21. Rats were exposed to uncontrollable electric shocks delivered to the floor with a constant current (0.8 mA) for 5 sec period. Daily sessions consisted of 60 trials on a random time schedule with an average of 55 sec. The first exposure to footshocks on PND 14 decreased body weight gain for 1 day. However, the second exposure to... -

a dose-dependent inhibiton of WDR cell responses to afferent inputs, the pinch-induced or the C-fiber evoked responses being more strongly depressed than the brush-induced or the A-fiber evoked responses. The dopamine-induced inhibition was more pronounced in the spinal cat than in the cat with intact spinal cord. The responses of WDR cell to thermal stimulation were also strongly inhibited. Dopamine D2 receptor antagonist, sulpiride, but not D1 receptor antagonist, significantly blocked the...
