Recent studies suggest that alterations in glutamate receptor subunit levels in mesocorticolimbic dopamine areas could account for neural adaptations in response to psychostimulant drugs. Although many drugs of abuse induce changes in ionotropic glutamate receptor subunits in mesocorticolimbic dopamine areas, the changes of ionotropic glutamate receptor subunits by repeated nicotine treatment in these areas are not known. To answer this question, we injected male Sprague-Dawley rats twice daily... -

95.3⁑1.6%). Tetanus also elicited similar LTD in the isolated GABAergic/glycinergic PSCs (n=5, 3.6⁑0.5%) and mixed PSCs (GABAergic/glycinergic/glutamatergic) (n=4, 2.2⁑0.7%). However, such a strong LTD was not observed in the mixed PSCs when 10 mM EGTA was added in the internal solution (n=10), indicating that postsynaptic Ca2 rise is needed for the strong LTD. This robust LTD might contribute to the active synaptic refinement occurring during the first postnatal week. -

The effects of ethanol on corticostriatal synaptic transmission were examined, using extracellular recording and analysis of population spike amplitudes in rat brain slices, to study how acute ethanol intoxication impairs striatal function. Ethanol caused a decrease in population spike amplitudes in a dose dependent manner (50∼200 mM). Pretreatment with picrotoxin, a γ-amino butyric acid (GABA)A receptor antagonist, increased the population spikes but ethanol (100 mM) was still effective in... -

at a lower concentration (30μM) increased GABAergic mIPSC frequency without affecting mIPSC amplitude, but it decreased both mIPSC frequency and amplitude at higher concentrations (≥300μM). In contrast, Zn2 (3 to 100μM) did not affect glutamatergic mEPSCs, although it slightly decreased both mIPSC frequency and amplitude at 300μM concentration. Facilitatory effect of Zn2 on GABAergic mIPSC frequency was occluded either in Ca2-free external solution or in the presence of... -

The effects of nitric oxide (NO) on inhibitory neurotransmitter receptors and some types of inhibitory receptors in dissociated rod bipolar cell (RBC) were investigated. In the whole cell voltage-clamping mode, the gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) activated current showed both sustained and transient components. GABA activated transient current was fully blocked by bicuculine, a GABAA receptor antagonist. The cis-4-aminocrotonic acid (CACA), a GABAC receptor agonist, evoked the sustained current... -
Peripheral Nerve Injury Alters Excitatory and Inhibitory Synaptic Transmission in Rat Spinal Cord Substantia Gelatinosa

Following peripheral nerve injury, excessive nociceptive inputs result in diverse physiological alterations in the spinal cord substantia gelatinosa (SG), lamina II of the dorsal horn. Here, I report the alterations of excitatory or inhibitory transmission in the SG of a rat model for neuropathic pain ("spared nerve injury"). Results from whole-cell recordings of SG neurons show that the number of distinct primary afferent fibers, identified by graded intensity of stimulation, is... -

the treatment with formalin, but not after formalin treatment, again indicating an increase in the GABAergic basal tone after the formalin injection which saturated the neuronal responses to GABA agonist. Morphine-induced increase in the spinal nociceptive responses after formalin treatment was inhibited by co-application of muscimol. These data suggest that formalin-induced inflammation increases GABAA basal tone and the inhibition of this augmented GABAA basal tone by morphine results in a... -

The purpose of the present study was to elucidate the possible involvement of the medial vestibular nucleus (MVN) and inferior vestibular nucleus (IVN) following acute hypotension in the vestibulo- autonomic reflex through vestibulosolitary or vestibuloventrolateral projections. Acute hypotension- induced cFos expression was assessed in combination with retrograde cholera toxin B subunit (CTb) tract tracing. After injection of CTb into the solitary region, CTb-labeled neurons were located... -

suppressed. However, when ipsilateral cortex was inactivated by GABA agonist, musimol, there was significant suppression of afferent sensory transmission of VPM thalamus. This suppressed responsiveness by ipsilateral musimol was not affected by bicuculline applied to contralateral cortex. These results suggest that afferent transmission to VPM thalamus may be subjected to the interhemispheric modulation via ipsilateral cortex during inactivation of GABAergic neurons in contralateral SI cortex. -

In the present study, the vestibularly evoked activity of inferior olive (IO) neurons was examined to investigate the vertical vestibular information transmitted through the vestibulo-olivo-cerebellar climbing fiber pathway. The extracellular recording was made in 74 neurons of the IO of cats, while animals were sinusoidally rotated. Most of vestibularly activated IO neurons responded to the vertical rotation (roll) test and were found in or near the β subnuclei (IOβ). The vestibular IO...
