Nitrogen-doped carbon nanosheets from polyurethane foams and removal of Cr(VI)
Jiaqi Duan, Baohua Zhang, Huailin Fan, Wenzhong Shen, Shijie Qu 한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 10 Pages
한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 2017, Vol.22 7 60-69 (10 pages)
Nitrogen-doped carbon nanosheets with a developed porous structure were prepared from polyurethane foams by hydrothermal carbonization following ZnCl2 chemical activation. Scanning electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, solid state 13C nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectra and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy were used to characterize the nitrogen-doped carbon nanosheet structure and composition. The removal of Cr(VI) by the N-doped carbon... -
Three-dimensional porous graphene materials for environmental applications
Muruganantham Rethinasabapathy, Sung-Min Kang, Sung-Chan Jang, Yun Suk Huh 한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 13 Pages
한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 2017, Vol.22 1 1-13 (13 pages)
Porous materials play a vital role in science and technology. The ability to control their pore structures at the atomic, molecular, and nanometer scales enable interactions with atoms, ions and molecules to occur throughout the bulk of the material, for practical applications. Three-dimensional (3D) porous carbon-based materials (e.g., graphene aerogels/hydrogels, sponges and foams) made of graphene or graphene oxide-based networks have attracted considerable attention because they offer low... -
Morphologies and surface properties of cellulose-based activated carbon nanoplates
Seulbee Lee, Min Eui Lee, Min Yeong Song, Se Youn Cho, Young Soo Yun, Hyoung-Joon Jin 한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 7 Pages
한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 2016, Vol.20 5 32-38 (7 pages)
In this study, cellulose nanoplates (CNPs) were fabricated using cellulose nanocrystals obtained from commercial microcrystalline cellulose (MCC). Their pyrolysis behavior and the characteristics of the product carbonaceous materials were investigated. CNPs showed a relatively high char yield when compared with MCC due to sulfate functional groups introduced during the manufacturing process. In addition, pyrolyzed CNPs (CCNPs) showed more effective chemical activation behavior compared with... -
Microstructural changes of polyacrylonitrile-based carbon fibers (T300 and T700) due to isothermal oxidation (1): focusing on morphological changes using scanning electron microscopy
Seong-Moon Oh, Sang-Min Lee, Dong-Su Kang, Jae-Seung Roh 한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 6 Pages

high specific strength, elastic modulus, thermal resistance, and thermal conductivity. Due to these properties, they have been increasingly widely used in various spheres including leisure, aviation, aerospace, military, and energy applications. However, if exposed to air at high temperatures, they are oxidized, thus weakening the properties of carbon fibers and carbon composite materials. As such, it is important to understand the oxidation reactions of carbon fibers, which are often used as a... -
Micro-sized carbon with dimple patterns prepared using an electro-spray method
Mi-Seon Park, Young-Seak Lee 한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 4 Pages
한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 2015, Vol.16 No.3 9 215-218 (4 pages)
Carbon micro particles with dimple patterns were produced by electro-spraying a solution of pitch in tetrahydrofuran. Particle formation depended on separation in an electrical field and volatilization of the solvent. More than 80% of the obtained carbon exhibited an average particle size of less than 50 μm. X-ray diffraction analysis suggests that the carbon with dimple patterns has increased crystallinity after heat treatment. -
Mesophase formation behavior in petroleum residues
Subhash Kumar, Manoj Srivastava 한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 12 Pages
한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 2015, Vol.16 No.3 3 171-182 (12 pages)
residues. In this work, mesophase formation behavior in petroleum residues was studied to prepare environmentally- benign mesophase pitches, and the composition of petroleum residues and its influence on the mesophase formation was investigated. Two petroleum residues, i.e., clarified oil s (CLO-1, CLO-2) obtained from fluid catalytic cracking units of different Indian petroleum refineries, were taken as feed stocks. A third petroleum residue, aromatic extract (AE), was produced by extraction of... -
Influence of Nitrogen moieties on CO2 capture of Carbon Aerogel
Da-Hee Jeon, Byung-Gak Min, Jong Gab Oh, Changwoon Nah and Soo-Jin Park 한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 5 Pages
한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 2015, Vol.16 No.1 9 57-61 (5 pages)
Carbon aerogel is a porous carbon material possessing high porosity and high specific surface area. Nitrogen doping reduced the specific surface area and micropores, but it furnished basic sites to improve the CO2 selectivity. In this work, N-doped carbon aerogels were prepared with different ratios of resorcinol/melamine by using the sol-gel method. The morphological properties were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Nitrogen content was studied by X-ray photoelectron... -
Modification of isotropic coal-tar pitch by acid treatments for carbon fiber melt-spinning
Mi Jung Yoo, Hyo Jun Ko, Yun-Soo Lim and Myung-Soo Kim 한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 8 Pages
한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 2014, Vol.15 No.4 3 247-254 (8 pages)
In this work, thermal treatment accompanied with different acid treatments was applied to a commercial coal tar pitch (CTP) to obtain a spinnable precursor pitch for carbon fiber. In the case of thermal treatment only, a relatively high reaction temperature of between 380°C and 400°C was required to obtain a softening point (SP) range of 220°C-260°C and many meso-phase particles were created during the application of high reaction temperature. When nitric acid or sulfuric acid treatment was... -

한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 2014, Vol.15 No.4 1 219-237 (19 pages)
The element carbon has been used as a source of energy for the past few hundred years, and now in this era of technology, carbon has played a significant and very prominent role in almost all fields of science and technology. So as an honour to this marvellous element, we humans should know about its various forms of existence. In this review article, we shed light on all possible carbon-allotropes; similarities in their synthesis techniques and the starting materials; their wide range of... -
Carbon nanospheres synthesized via solution combustion method: their application as an anode material and catalyst for hydrogen production
Vivek Dhand, M Venkateswer Rao, J. S. Prasad, Garima Mittal, Kyong Yop Rhee, Hyeon Ju Kim, Dong Ho Jung 한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 5 Pages
한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 2014, Vol.15 No.3 7 198-202 (5 pages)
Amorphous agglomerates of carbon nanospheres (CNS) with a diameter range of 10-50 nm were synthesized using the solution combustion method. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) revealed a densely packed high surface area of SP2-hybridized carbon; however, there were no crystalline structural components, as can be seen from the scanning electron microscopy, HRTEM, X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, and thermal gravimetric analyses. Electrochemical and thermo catalytic...
