Comparative numerical evaluation for the low velocity impact behavior of T300 and T800 composite system
Jae-Seok Choi, Heung Soap Choi, Soo-Jin Park, Myung Kyun Park 한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 7 Pages
한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 2017, Vol.22 9 89-95 (7 pages)
reinforced polymer (CFRP) composites have been used for many decades for extreme light weight design purposes in various areas, such as the aerospace industry, automobiles, sports goods and etc. because they provide the advantages of high specific strength and high rigidity [1]. In particular, the fuselage and wings of various aircraft, as well as the load bearing structures and components of mechanical and civil engineering systems are currently being manufactured with CFRP. However, even a low... -
Mechanical properties of epoxy composites reinforced with ammonia-treated graphene oxides
Mi-Seon Park, Sangmin Lee, Young-Seak Lee 한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 7 Pages
한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 2017, Vol.21 1 1-7 (7 pages)
GO surfaces. The highest tensile and impact strength values were 42.1 MPa and 12.3 J/m, respectively, which were observed in an epoxy composite prepared with GO treated with a 28% ammonia solution. This improved tensile strength was 2.2 and 1.3 times higher than those of the neat epoxy and the non-treated GO-based epoxy composite, respectively. The amine groups on the GO ensure its participation in the cross-linking reaction of the epoxy resin under amine curing agent condition and enhance its... -
Effects of maleic anhydride content on mechanical properties of carbon fibers-reinforced maleic anhydride-grafted-polypropylene matrix composites
Hyun-Il Kim, Woong Han, Woong-Ki Choi, Soo-Jin Park, Kay-Hyeok An, Byung-Joo Kim 한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 8 Pages
한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 2016, Vol.20 6 39-46 (8 pages)
direct oxyfluorination on CF surfaces was applied to increase the interfacial strength between the CFs and MAPP matrix. The mechanical properties of the CFs/MAPP composites are likely to be different in terms of MA content. Surface characteristics were observed by scanning electron microscope, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and single fiber contact angle method. The mechanical properties of the composites were also measured by a critical stress intensity factor (KIC). From the KIC test... -
Adsorption capability of activated carbon synthesized from coconut shell
Md Shariful Islam, Bee Chin Ang, Samira Gharehkhani, Amalina Binti, Muhammad Afifi 한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 9 Pages
한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 2016, Vol.20 1 1-9 (9 pages)
Activated carbon was synthesized from coconut shells. The Brunauer, Emmett and Teller surface area of the synthesized activated carbon was found to be 1640 m2/g with a pore volume of 1.032 cm3/g. The average pore diameter of the activated carbon was found to be 2.52 nm. By applying the size-strain plot method to the X-ray diffraction data, the crystallite size and the crystal strain was determined to be 42.46 nm and 0.000489897, respectively, which indicate a perfect crystallite structure. The... -
Phenylethynyl-terminated polyimide, exfoliated graphite nanoplatelets, and the composites: an overview
Donghwan Cho, Lawrence T. Drzal 한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 11 Pages
한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 2016, Vol.19 1 1-11 (11 pages)
The dynamic mechanical and thermal properties and the electrical resistivity of xGnP/PETI-5 composites are characterized. The effect of liquid rubber amine-terminated poly(butadiene-co-acrylonitrile) (ATBN)-coated xGnP particles incorporated into epoxy resin on the toughness of xGnP/epoxy composites is examined in terms of its impact on Izod strength. This paper provides an extensive overview from fundamental studies on PETI-5 and xGnP, as well as applied studies on relevant composite materials. -

Stabilization of pitch-based carbon fibers accompanying electron beam irradiation and their mechanical properties
Mi-Seon Park, Yoonyoung Ko, Min-Jung Jung, Young-Seak Lee 한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 6 Pages
한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 2015, Vol.16 No.2 8 121-126 (6 pages)
stabilization step exhibit a comparable tensile strength to that of general purpose carbon fibers. The carbon fibers pretreated with an absorbed dose of 3000 kGy have a tensile strength of 0.54 GPa for a similar fiber diameter. Elemental, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analyses indicate that Ebeam irradiation is an efficient oxidation and dehydrogenation treatment for pitch fibers by showing that the intensity of the aliphatic C?H stretching and aromatic CH2 ben -
The effects of stacking sequence on the penetration-resistant behaviors of T800 carbon fiber composite plates under low-velocity impact loading
Furqan Ahmad, Jung-Wuk Hong, Heung Soap Choi, Soo-Jin Park, Myung Kyun Park 한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 9 Pages
한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 2015, Vol.16 No.2 6 107-115 (9 pages)
Impact damages induced by a low-velocity impact load on carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) composite plates fabricated with various stacking sequences were studied experimentally. The impact responses of the CFRP composite plates were significantly affected by the laminate stacking sequences. Three types of specimens, specifically quasi-isotropic, unidirectional, and cross-ply, were tested by a constant impact carrying the same impact energy level. An impact load of 3.44 kg, corresponding to... -
Preparation and characterization of carbon fiber-reinforced thermosetting composites: a review
Fan-Long Jin, Soo-Jin Park 한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 11 Pages
한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 2015, Vol.16 No.2 1 67-77 (11 pages)
Carbon fibers (CFs) have a unique combination of properties which allow them to be widely used as reinforcing materials in advanced polymer composites. The mechanical properties of CF-reinforced polymer composites are governed mainly by the quality of interfacial adhesion between the CFs and the polymer matrix. Surface treatments of CFs are generally carried out to introduce chemical functional groups on the fiber surfaces, which provide the ability to control the surface characteristics of CFs.... -

and carbon skin-basalt core (CSBC) composites. Fracture tests were conducted and the fracture surfaces of the carbon/basalt/epoxy hybrid composites were then examined using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results showed that the flexural strength and flexural modulus of the CSBC specimen respectively were ~32% and ~245% greater than those of the BSCC specimen. However, the interlaminar fracture toughness of the CSBC specimen was ~10% smaller than that of the BSCC specimen. SEM results on...
