Endothelium, particularly pulmonary endothelium, is predisposed to injury by reactive oxygen species (ROS) and their derivatives. Heme oxygenase (HO) has been demonstrated to provide cytoprotective effects in models of oxidant-induced cellular and tissue injuries. In the present study, we investigated the effects of YS 49 against oxidant [tert-butylhydroperoxide (TBH)]-induced injury using cultured sheep pulmonary artery endothelial cells (SPAECs). The viability of SPAECs was determined by... -
Comparison of Vasodilator Effects of Platycodin D and D3 in Rats
Dong-YoonLim, Byeong-CheolKim, Eun-BangLee 대한생리학회-대한약리학회 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 7 Pages
대한생리학회-대한약리학회 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2003, Vol.7 No.3 5 149-155 (7 pages)
The aim of the present study was to examine the effects of platycodin D and D3, which are active components derived from the roots of Platycodon grandiflorum A. DC., on the contractile force of the i3olated rat aorta and blood pressure of the anesthetized rat, and also to elucidate its mechanism of action. Both phenylephrine (an adrenergic α1-receptor agonist) and high potassium (a membrane- depolarizing agent) caused great contractile responses in the isolated aortic strips. Platycodin D at... -

have demonstrated high efficacy in the cytotoxicity against human bladder carcinoma cell-lines (T-24/HT-1376). The cytotoxicity of these compounds against rabbit proximal renal tubular cells and human renal cortical tissues, was determined by MTT assay, the [3H]-thymidine uptake and glucose consumption test, and found to be quite less than those of cisplatin. Based on our results, these novel platinum compounds appear to be valuable lead compounds with high efficacy and low nephrotoxicity. -
Altered Secretory Pattern of Pancreatic Enzymes and Gastrointestinal Hormones in Streptozotocin-induced Diabetic Rats

This study was performed to investigate the pancreatic exocrine dysfunction in streptozotocin- induced diabetic rats. Changes in pancreatic enzymes secretion and in pancreatic enzymes content were observed. The output and the tissue content of amylase were significantly reduced in diabetic rats, while the output and the content of lipase were increased. Plasma secretin and cholecystokinin (CCK) concentrations of diabetic rats were significantly increased compared to those of normal rats. The... -

대한생리학회-대한약리학회 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2002, Vol.6 No.5 5 261-268 (8 pages)
The aim of the present study was to investigate the interaction of estradiol-17β-bovine serum albumin (E2-BSA) and calcitropic hormones, such as parathyroid hormone, calcitonin, and vitamin D, in regulation of Ca2 uptake in primary cultured renal proximal tubule cells. Statistically significant increase in Ca2 uptake was found from 2 hours after E2-BSA (109 M) treatment, while estradiol-17β (109 M) did not affect. Treatment of the cells with E2-BSA (109 M)... -

in body weight were detected between control and acarbose-treated groups, plasma glucose level in acarbose-treated group was markedly reduced as compared to the control. In the mechanism study, acarbose downregulated the SI and SGLT1 gene expressions, and upregulated the GLUT4 mRNA and protein expressions when compared to the control group. In conclusion, the data obtained strongly implicate that acarbose can prevent the hyperglycemia in KKAy mice possibly through blocking intestinal glucose... -

of PC against rabbit proximal renal tubular cells, human renal cortical cells and human renal cortical tissues, determined using the MTT assaying technique, the [3H]-thymidine uptake and glucose consumption tests, was found to be quite less than those of cisplatin. Based on these results, this novel platinum(II) coordination complex appears to be better for improving antitumor activities with low nephrotoxicity and is a valuable lead in the development of new clinically available anticancer... -
Effects of Acarbose on the Expression of Obese and Neuropeptide Y (NPY) Genes in Mice on High-Carbohydrate Diet
JiyeonKimSunghyunChung 대한생리학회-대한약리학회 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 6 Pages
대한생리학회-대한약리학회 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 1999, Vol.3 No.4 8 433-438 (6 pages)
Two components of the neuroendocrine-hormonal response to long-term treatment of acarbose, adipose tissue-derived leptin and central neuropeptide Y (NPY), were investigated in the ICR mice on a high- carbohydrate diet. Acarbose, administered 5 or 50 mg per 100 g diet for four weeks, dose dependently suppressed body weight gain. The body weight gain was reduced along with the amount of daily food intake in 50 mg acarbose-treated group at 7th and 28th day. 5 or 50 mg acarbose treatment... -

대한생리학회-대한약리학회 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 1999, Vol.3 No.3 3 251-261 (11 pages)
The effects of carnosine and related compounds (CRCs) including anserine, homocarnosine, histidine, and β-alanine on monosaccharide autoxidation and H2O2 formation were investigated. The incubation of CRCs with D-glucose, D-glucosamine, and D, L-glyceraldehyde at 37oC increased the absorption maxima at 285 nm, 273 nm, and 290∼330 nm, respectively. D, L-glyceraldehyde was the most reactive sugar with CRCs. The presence of copper strongly stimulated the reaction of carnosine and anserine with... -
The Roles of Arachidonic Acid and Calcium in the Angiotensin II-induced Inhibition of Na+ Uptake in Renal Proximal Tubule Cells
SooHyunPark, HyunJooKoh, YeunHeeLee, ChangHoSon, MinKyoungPark, YoungJaeLee, HoJaeHan 대한생리학회-대한약리학회 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 9 Pages
대한생리학회-대한약리학회 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 1999, Vol.3 No.1 11 83-91 (9 pages)
Angiotensin II (ANG II) has a biphasic effect on Na transport in proximal tubule: low doses of ANG II increase the Na transport, whereas high doses of ANG II inhibit it. However, the mechanisms of high dose ANG II-induced inhibition on Na uptake are poorly understood. Thus the aim of the present study was to investigate signal transduction pathways involved in the ANG II-induced inhibition of Na uptake in the primary cultured rabbit renal proximal tubule cells (PTCs)...
