근대 네이션(nation)에 대해서는 다양한 정의가 있다. 그 가운데 필자는 우선 A. 스미스의 견해에 주목한다. 그에 따르면 네이션이란 영토적·정치적 단위이자 공동체이며, 통상 공통의 문화와 혈통을 지닌 정치화된 에스닉(ethnic) 집단이다. 이러한 네이션은 근대에 이르러 비로소 국가를 형성(“민족국가” nation-state)한다. 이들 국가 간에는 평등과 상호 주권이 인정되고 그 내부의 성원들은 동등한 권리와 의무를 갖는 시민(citizens - 臣民이 아님)이 된다. 근대 네이션은 서구의 경우 대체
