The Role of Professional Development in Improving Quality and Supporting Child Outcomes in Early Education and Care
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 20 Pages
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 2019, Vol.13 No.2 4 49-68 (20 pages)
better understanding of how ECEC educators and services can achieve (and be supported to optimise) children’s development and learning outcomes. This paper argues for more rigorous PD designs, considered evidence-based content and delivery that are embedded within a rich evidence-base of practice, and that focus on educator effectiveness, practice change, and also on the benefits to children’s learning and development. The paper draws upon effective PD literature and describes lessons learnt,... -
A Cross-Disciplinary Study of Early Childhood Development and Peacebuilding: New Conceptualizations of Early Childhood for Global Sustainable Development
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 21 Pages
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 2018, Vol.12 No.1 1 1-21 (21 pages)
discussing the increasingly high profile of ECD in the global advocacy for building sustainable development. The discussion presents a multidimensional conceptualization of early childhood that is rooted in a wider social justice and human rights agenda and encapsulated in an ecological framework that depicts the intrinsic relationship between the child, family, community, and wider society. The findings reveal the potential linkages between ECD and young children’s role in fostering peace as... -
Values, Risks, and the Shaping of Kindergarten Rules in Japan
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 21 Pages
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 2017, Vol.11 No.2 3 45-65 (21 pages)
understanding of rules in the context of Japanese kindergartens, one that is underpinned by teachers’ and children’s perspectives of desirable and undesirable learning behaviours and outcomes. Values education and risk society theory are employed as the theoretical basis to conceptualize the topic. The analysis from teachers’ interviews, teachers’ questionnaires and children’s interviews shows how values, risks and rules are foregrounded in teachers’ and children’s perspectives, building... -

Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 27 Pages
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 2016, Vol.10 No.3 5 97-123 (27 pages)
children had competences and high interest in using ICT and experienced pleasure and success during their ICT activities, but their overall access to ICT was low, and active and meaningful ICT use was very limited. This paper concludes by suggesting the provision of sufficient reliable hardware and appropriate software for young children to explore the potential of ICT. And EC teachers need to develop effective pedagogies that can support the children’s learning with and through the use of ICT. -

Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 22 Pages
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 2016, Vol.10 No.2 5 71-92 (22 pages)
preschool children’s dramatic play behaviour. Video observations and the Smilansky Scale for the Evaluation of Dramatic and Socio-Dramatic Play (Smilanksy & Shefatya, 1990) were used with 101 preschool children aged 4 to 6 years in selected early childhood educational settings in Melbourne, Australia. Findings reveal that the overall level of children’s dramatic play behaviour was low. A typology of four play styles will be presented. Implications on educators’ pedagogy are discussed. -
BETTER THAN Bubble WRAP: Do We “Over Regulate and Over Protect” Children at the Expense of Them Learning How to “Take Risks”?
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 17 Pages
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 2015, Vol.9 No.1 6 111-127 (17 pages)
by children are now often regarded as dangerous and irresponsible. The freedom of children to experience life in a way that allows them to develop competencies they need to become competent risk managers can be been hampered by over regulation of governing bodies and over protective practices of parents and caregivers, creating a bubble-wrapped generation in some communities. This paper captures an approach where child safety is reconceptualised by introducing a cultural-historical informed... -
A Cultural-Historical View of Child Development: Key Concepts for Going Beyond a Universal View of the Child
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 19 Pages
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 2015, Vol.9 No.1 2 19-37 (19 pages)
of conceptualizing children’s development (Hedegaard & Fleer, 2013). In drawing upon cultural-historical theory, this paper argues for a more localised and nuanced conception of human development. Through analyzing how society creates the conditions for children’s development (Hedegaard, 2012), this paper presents a view of development that captures both a traditional (historical lived in the present moment) and contemporary (new cultural technologies) view of children’s lived experiences. -
