Outbreaks of porcine epidemic diarrhea (PED) have resulted in significant economic losses in the swine industry, and another PED outbreak occurred in 2014 in Korea. Isolating and culturing PED virus (PEDV) allow investigations into its pathogenesis and the development of vaccines and diagnostic assays. In this study, we successfully isolated two PEDV isolates (QIAP1401 and QIAP1402) from naturally infected piglets at Jeju-do, Korea. Viral propagation was confirmed in Vero cells based on... -
Comparative proteomic analysis of outer membrane protein 43 (omp43)-deficient Bartonella henselae
Jun-Gu Kang, Hee-Woo Lee, Sungjin Ko, Joon-Seok Chae 대한수의학회 Journal of Veterinary Science 12 Pages
대한수의학회 Journal of Veterinary Science 2018, 제 19권 제 1호 9 59-70 (12 pages)
Outer membrane proteins (OMPs) of Gram-negative bacteria constitute the first line of defense protecting cells against environmental stresses including chemical, biophysical, and biological attacks. Although the 43-kDa OMP (OMP43) is major porin protein among Bartonella henselae-derived OMPs, its function remains unreported. In this study, OMP43-deficient mutant B. henselae (Δomp43) was generated to investigate OMP43 function. Interestingly, Δomp43 exhibited weaker proliferative ability than... -
Anti-melanogenic effects of black, green, and white tea extracts on immortalized melanocytes

Tea contains polyphenols and is one of the most popular beverages consumed worldwide. Because most tyrosinase inhibitors that regulate melanogenesis are phenol/catechol derivatives, this study investigated the inhibitory effects of Camellia sinensis water extracts (CSWEs), including black tea, green tea, and white tea extracts, on melanogenesis using immortalized melanocytes. CSWEs inhibited melanin accumulation and melanin synthesis along with tyrosinase activity in a concentration-dependent... -
Epidemiological characteristics of pulmonary pneumocystosis and concurrent infections in pigs in Jeju Island, Korea
Ki-Seung Kim, Ji-Youl Jung, Jae-Hoon Kim, Sang-Chul Kang, Eui-Kyung Hwang, Bong-Kyun Park, Dae-Yong Kim, Jae-Hoon Kim* 대한수의학회 Journal of Veterinary Science 5 Pages
대한수의학회 Journal of Veterinary Science 2011, 제 12권 제 1호 3 15-19 (5 pages)
Epidemiological characteristics of swine pulmonary Pneumocystis (P.) carinii and concurrent infections were surveyed on Jeju Island, Korea, within a designated period in 172 pigs submitted from 54 farms to the Department of Veterinary Medicine, Jeju National University. The submitted cases were evaluated by histopathology, immunohistochemistry, PCR/RT-PCR, and bacteriology. P. carinii infection was confirmed in 39 (22.7%) of the 172 pigs. Histopathologically, the lungs had moderate to severe... -
Survey of Helicobacter infection in domestic and feral cats in Korea

fundamental change in our understanding of gastric diseases in humans. Previous studies have found various Helicobacter spp. in dogs and cats, and pets have been questioned as a zoonotic carrier. The present study surveyed the Helicobacter infections and investigated the presence of H. felis and H. pylori infections in domestic and feral cats in Korea. Sixty-four domestic cats and 101 feral cats were selected from an animal shelter. Saliva and feces were evaluated by Helicobacter genus-specific... -
Molecular cloning of the cDNA of canine homeodomaininteracting protein kinase 2

The research of p53 is being conducted to find the mechanisms of tumorigenesis and to treat various cancers. Homeodomain-interacting protein kinase2 (HIPK2) is an important factor to regulate p53 and to increase the stability of p53. Activation of HIPK2 leads to the selective phosphorylation of p53, resulting in growth arrest and the enhancement of apoptosis. In this study, the canine HIPK2 cDNA fragments were obtained, and their overlapping regions were aligned to give a total sequence of 3489... -
Phenotype of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-α(PPARα)deficient mice on mixed background fed high fat diet

to establish the phenotypic characterization of PPARα-/- mice prior to the obesity-related study. In this study, we observed phenotype of PPARα-/- mice on mixed genetic background (C57BL/6N X 129/Sv) fed a high fat diet for 16 weeks. PPARα-/- mice, regardless of sex, raised body growth rate significantly comparing with wild type and showed male-specific fatty change in the liver. They were shown to lack hepatic induction of PPARα target genes encoding enzymes for fatty acid β-oxidation. -
