a gram-negative, broad host range bacterial pathogen which causes soft rot disease in potatoes as well as other vegetables worldwide. While Pectobacterium infection relies on the production of major cell wall degrading enzymes, other virulence factors and the mechanism of genetic adaptation of this pathogen is not yet clear. In the present study, we have performed an in-depth genome-wide characterization of Pcc strain ICMP5702 isolated from potato and compared it with other pathogenic bacteria... -
Biocontrol Activity of Aspergillus terreus ANU-301 against Two Distinct Plant Diseases, Tomato Fusarium Wilt and Potato Soft Rot

against Dickeya chrysanthemi (Dc), but also demonstrated protective effect in potato tuber against soft rot disease. Gas chro- matography-tandem mass spectrometry analysis of CF of ANU-301 identified 2,4-bis(1-methyl-1-phenylethyl)- phenol (MPP) as the most abundant compound. MPP inhibited growth of Dc, but not of FOL, in a dose-dependent manner, and protected potato tuber from the soft rot disease induced by Dc. In conclusion, Aspergil- lus terreus ANU-301 could be used and further tested as a... -
Control of Postharvest Bacterial Soft Rot by Gamma Irradiation and its Potential Modes of Action

changes of cells by gamma irradiation, it also affected the membrane integrity in a dose-dependent manner. The mechanisms by which the gamma irradiation decreased the bacterial soft rot can be directly associated with the disruption of the cell membrane of the bacterial pathogen, along with DNA fragmentation, results in dose-dependent cell inactivation. These findings suggest that gamma irradiation has potential as an antibacterial approach to reduce the severity of the soft rot of paprika. -
First Report of Soft Rot by Pectobacterium carotovorum subsp. brasiliense on Amaranth in Korea

amaranth such as leaf blight, damping-off, and root rot. As a causal agent of soft rot disease, Pectobacterium spp. could infect various plant species. In this study, we isolated the bacterial pathogen causing soft rot of amaranth in South Korea. In Gangneung, Gangwon province during 2017, amaranth plants showed typical soft rot symptoms such as wilting, defoliation and odd smell. To isolate pathogen, the macerated tissues of contaminated amaranth were spread onto LB agar plates and purified by... -
First Report on Bacterial Soft Rot of Graft-cactus Chamaecereus silvestrii Caused by Pectobacterium carotovorum subsp. carotovorum in Korea
한국식물병리학회 The Plant Pathology Journal 4 Pages
한국식물병리학회 The Plant Pathology Journal 2007, 23권 4호 14 314-317 (4 pages)
A soft stem rot disease was observed on Chamaecereus silvestrii (Korean name: Sanchui), a scion of graftcactus, in major growing areas of Suwon (National Horticulture Research Institute), Anseong, Eumseong, Cheonan, Daegu, and Goyang, Korea during 2000 and 2001. Typical symptoms were soft rots characterized by moist and watery decay of the whole cactus stem, which initiated as small water-soaked lesions and enlarged rapidly to the entire stem. The causal organism isolated from the infected stems... -
Occurrence of Bacterial Soft Rot of Lily Bulb Caused by Pectobacterium carotovorum subsp. carotovorum and Pseudomonas marginalis in Korea
한국식물병리학회 The Plant Pathology Journal 3 Pages
한국식물병리학회 The Plant Pathology Journal 2003, 19권 1호 8 43-45 (3 pages)
Soft rot symptom was observed on lily bulb in the fields and at a low temperature storage house from 1999 to 2000 in Korea. The small dark-brown lesion appeared on the bulb, and enlarged and developed into the inner scales of the bulb. The bulb became water soaked and gave out unpleasant odor. Two different pathogenic bacteria were isolated from infected tissues. The causal bacteria were identified as Pectobacterium carotovorum subsp. carotovorum (Erwinia carotovora subsp. carotovora) and... -
Soft Rot of Onion Bulbs Caused by Pseudomonas marginalis Under Low Temperature Storage

of 30º-33℃. However, it showed strong pathogenicity to onion bulbs at 25ºand 5℃ at 3 days and 2 months, respectively. The bacterium also caused soft rot on potato and showed hypersensitive reactions to tobacco and potato. The causal bacterium of onion soft rot was identified as Pseudomonas marginalis based on morphological, biochemical, and physiological characteristics including LOPAT. Soft rot in onion under low temperature storage caused by P. marginalis has not been previously reported.
