An overview of new oxidation methods for polyacrylonitrile?based carbon fibers
Hye Kyoung Shin, Mira Park, Hak-Yong Kim and Soo-Jin Park 한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 8 Pages
한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 2015, Vol.16 No.1 2 11-18 (8 pages)
The process of oxidizing polyacrylonitrile (PAN)-based carbon fibers converts them into an infusible and non-flammable state prior to carbonization. This represents one of the most important stages in determining the mechanical properties of the final carbon fibers, but the most commonly used methods, such as thermal treatment (200°C to 300°C), tend to waste a great deal of process time, money, and energy. There is therefore a need to develop more advanced oxidation methods for PAN precursor... -
Effects of phosphorus content and operating temperature on the electrochemical performance of phosphorus-doped soft carbons
Eun Hee Kim and Yongju Jung 한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 5 Pages
한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 2014, Vol.15 No.4 7 277-281 (5 pages)
A series of high capacity soft carbons with different phosphorus contents were successfully prepared by carbonizing petroleum cokes treated with hypophosphorous acid at 900°C. The effect of phosphorus content on the electrochemical performance of the soft carbons was extensively investigated. The P-doped soft carbons exhibited greatly enhanced discharge capacities and outstanding rate capabilities with increasing phosphorus content. In addition, the influence of temperature on the... -

The element carbon has been used as a source of energy for the past few hundred years, and now in this era of technology, carbon has played a significant and very prominent role in almost all fields of science and technology. So as an honour to this marvellous element, we humans should know about its various forms of existence. In this review article, we shed light on all possible carbon-allotropes; similarities in their synthesis techniques and the starting materials; their wide range of... -
Effect of microporosity on nitrogen-doped microporous carbons for electrode of supercapacitor
Eun-A Cho, Seul-Yi Lee, Soo-Jin Park 한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 4 Pages
한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 2014, Vol.15 No.3 9 210-213 (4 pages)
Nitrogen-doped microporous carbons were prepared using a polyvinylidene fluoride/melamine mixture. The electrochemical performance of the nitrogen-doped microporous carbons after being subjected to different carbonization conditions was investigated. The nitrogen to carbon ratio and specific surface area decreased with an increase in the carbonization temperature. However, the maximum specific capacitance of 208 F/g was obtained at a carbonization temperature of 800°C because it produced the... -
Preparation of novolac-type phenol-based activated carbon with a hierarchical pore structure and its electric double-layer capacitor performance
Dayoung Lee, Jin-Young Jung, Mi-Seon Park, Young-Seak Lee 한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 6 Pages
한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 2014, Vol.15 No.3 6 192-197 (6 pages)
A hierarchical pore structured novolac-type phenol based-activated carbon with micropores and mesopores was fabricated. Physical activation using a sacrificial silicon dioxide (SiO2) template and chemical activation using potassium hydroxide (KOH) were employed to prepare these materials. The morphology of the well-developed pore structure was characterized using field-emission scanning electron microscopy. The novolac-type phenol-based activated carbon retained hierarchical pores (micropores... -
Influence of ionic liquid additives on the conducting and interfacial properties of organic solvent-based electrolytes against an activated carbon electrode
Kyungmin Kim, Yongju Jung, Seok Kim 한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 5 Pages
한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 2014, Vol.15 No.3 5 187-191 (5 pages)
This study reports on the influence of N-butyl-N-methylpyrrolidinium tetrafluoroborate (PYR14BF4) ionic liquid additive on the conducting and interfacial properties of organic solvent based electrolytes against a carbon electrode. We used the mixture of ethylene carbonate/dimethoxyethane (1:1) as an organic solvent electrolyte and tetraethylammonium tetrafluoroborate (TEABF4) as a common salt. Using the PYR14BF ionic liquid as additive produced higher ionic conductivity in the electrolyte and... -

Kap Seung Yang, Bo-Hye Kim, Seong-Ho Yoon 한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 9 Pages
한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 2014, Vol.15 No.3 2 162-170 (9 pages)
Pitch is an attractive raw material for carbon fiber precursors due to its low cost stemming from its availability as a residue of coking and petroleum processes. Ford Motor Company reported a carbon fiber target price of $11.0/kg by using a fast cycle-time manufacturing method with carbon fiber in an inexpensive format, allowing for an average retail price of gasoline of $3.58/gallon. They also recommended the use of carbon fiber with strength of 1700 MPa, modulus of 170 GPa, and 1.5%... -

Ki-Soo Son, Seok Kim 한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 4 Pages
한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 2014, Vol.15 No.2 7 113-116 (4 pages)
that the GNS/S composites exhibited enhanced specific-current density and ~10% higher capacity, in comparison with the S-containing, activated-carbon samples. The composite electrode also showed better cycling performance for multiple charge/discharge cycles. The improvement in the capacity and cycling stability of the GNS/S composite electrode is probably related to the fact that the graphene in the composite improves conductivity and that the graphene is well dispersed in the composites.
