-hotopolymerization of acrylonitrile in the frozen glassy state of Ni (II) Cl2-ethylene glycol-HCl and Ni(II)Cl2-N,N-dimethylformamide-HCl systems were carried out. The infrared and ultra-violet spectroscopic studies reveal that several different kinds of Ni(II)Cl2-monomer, Ni(II)Cl2-solvent complex are formed in the polymerization systems and the species responsible for the photoinitiation are octahedral Ni(II)-monomer complex, having absorption maximum at around 400nm, however, a further detailed kinetic study is needed for the explanation of the role of HCl in the photoinitiation.
