직시목에 속하는 방아깨비, 긴꼬리쌕새기, 바퀴 그리고 사마귀등 4종의 소화관을 비교 관찰하였다. 1. 방아깨비의 소화관은 직선상으로써 gastric caeca 가 전, 중장 양쪽으로 뻗었고 proventriculus, cardiac 그리고 pyloric valve가 없기 때문에 소화되지 않은 먹이의 잔여물이 후장으로 보내어진다. 2. 긴꼬리쌕새기는 crop이 상당히 크고 proventriculus가 잘 발달하였다. 두 개의 커다란 gastric caeca는 중장 전단의 proventriculus 양쪽에 위치한다. 유문부에는 중장의 상피세포들이 pyloric valve를 형성하며ileum은 가늘고 내강이 좁다. 3. 바퀴의 proventriculus는 작게 발달하였고 여기에서 뻗어나온 cardiac valve는 중장내에까지 길게 뻗었다. 유문부에는 후장의 상피세포들이 pyloric valve을 형성한다. 4. 사마귀의 전장은 매우 길며 proventriculus는 크게 발달하였지만 cardiac valve 짧다. 중장은 짧고 굵으며 유문부의 중장상피세포들이 valve를 형성하고 ileum은 가늘고 rectum의 내강이 넓다.
The comparative anatomy of the alimentary canals was described and illustrated for the larvae, adults of Acrida cinerea, Conocephalus gladiatus. Blattella germanica, and Paratenodera sinensis 1. The alimentary canal of Acrida cinerea is a straight tract and has no cardiac, pyloric valve, and proventriculus. Therefore, undigested materials are directly passed into hindgut. 2. The crop and proventriculus of Conocephalus gladiatus are large and well developed and this alimentary canal is also characterized by stretching out the two large gastric caeca from the anterior midgut. The pyloric valve is made up of the midgut epithelial cells in pyloric portion and the ileum is very slender. 3. The proventriculus of Blattella germanica is rather small, but well developed and cardiac valve is long and so projected into the midgut. The epithelial cells of anterial hindgut form the pyloric valve similar to cardiac valve. 4. The foregut of Paratenodera sinensis is longest among others and proventriculus is also well developed but cardiac valve is rather short. The pyloric valve is composed of midgut epithelial cells in pyloric portion and the lumen of ileum is narrow but that of the rectum is enlarged.
