대기중에 노출된 용액에 보관되어 있는 ribulose bisphosphate carboxylase-oxygenase의 결정들이 수주일 사이에 점차적으로 변화한다. 이 변화를 X-선 회절의 측면에서 규명하였다. 즉 결정의 C축 길이가 감소하였고 ($137.6;{AA}$에서 $0.8;{AA}$까지), 회절 반점의 세기가 변하였고, 큰 회철 각도에 해당하는 X-선 반점들이 점차 세기를 잃었다. 질소하에서 결정을 기르고 보관하면 이러한 변화를 막을 수 있으나 결정용액에 넣은 2-mercaptoethanol은 이러한 변화를 막지 못한다.
Crystals of RuBisCO stored in solutions open to the atmosphere change gradually over a period of several weeks. These changes can be characterized by the diffraction pattern: they include a correlated decrease in the c-axial length (of up to $0.8{AA}$ in $137.6{AA}$) and mean change in intensity of diffraction, and a gradual loss of intensity in the higher angle diffraction. Growth and storage of crystals in a nitrogen atmosphere prevents these changes, but 2-mercaptoethanol in the crystallizing solution does not.
