미국흰불나방 (Hyphantria cunea Drury)의 성숙된 정자는 가늘고 긴 사상의 구조를 가지고 있었으며, 한 피낭당 2$^{8}$ 개씩의 정자들이 정자다발의 형태로 간직되어 있었다. 응축된 핵이 밀봉되어 있는 두부는 피낭세포내에 포매되어 있었고 편모는 9+2형의 flagella axoneme 외부에 9개의 부미세소관을 가진 9+9+2의 형태로 관찰되었다. 편모의 주위에서는 기질내부에 준결정물질을 가진 미토콘드리아 유도체들이 장축의 방향을 따라서 미부까지 뻗어 있었는데, 중부에서는 하나로 융합되어 있는 반면 미부에서는 2개로 분리되어 있었다. 한편, 두부와 미부의 말단을 제외한 정자의 거의 모든 부분에서는 원형질막으로부터 돌출된 2종류의 부속지들이 관찰되었다. 이들은 망상의 내부구조를 가지는 하나의 부속지와, 명대와 암대의 주기적 배열을 가지는 여러개의 부속지로 이루어져 있고, 특히 망상의 부속지는 제6번 이중미세소관이 위치하는 부위의 원형질막에 부착되어 있었다. 또한 미토콘드리아가 편모에 부착하는 위치도 항상 일정하였으며, 미토콘드리아 유도체의 대칭면은 축사의 대칭면에 대해 반드시 오른쪽으로 기울어져 있었고, 그 각도는 미국흰불나방의 모든 정자에서 동일하였다.
The mature sperms of the fall-web worms, Hyphantria cunea Drury, are fillamentous in form and grouped together in sperm bundles. In this species, most cysts contain exactly 256(2$^{8}$ ) spermatozoa and all of them are orientated in the same directions within the same cyst. At the head region of the sperm, mucleus is compactly condensed within the cytoplasmic membrane and anterior tip is embeded in the cyst cells. At the middle piece of mature sperm, a basic 9+9+2 pattern of the flagellum which has 9 accessory microtubules outside of the regular 9+2 arrangement of microtubules in axoneme. Around this flagellum, mitochondrial derivatives with intramitochondrial paracrystalline material within the matrix are extended along most of the length of the sperm. The number and morphology of the mitochondrial derivatives are not coincide from anterior to posterior region. At the middle piece, only one mitochondrial derivative persist but at the tail region, apparently two of equal size are observed. Along most of the length of the sperm, two kinds of elaborate laminated appendages project from the plasma membrane. One of appendages, always located peripheral to doublet number 6 of the flagellum, differs from that of the others in having reticular fine structure. And the other appendages are seen as broad columns composed of evenly disposed light and dense bands. The position of the mitochondria with respect to the flagellum is fixed to same direction. A plane of symmetry established by the mitochondrial derivatives is slighty inclined to the right to the plane passing through the center of both central tubules. And the angle established by these two planes is characteristic of this species.
