Percutaneous transhepatic variceal obliteration (PTVO) is a safe effective and palliative means of treatment in bleeding gastroesophageal varices in cases of conservative treatment failure massive bleeding gastric varices which cannot be controlled with endoscopic scler-otherapy & high surgical risk group as Child C. We have performed 67 cases of percutaneous transhepatic variceal obliteration in 60 patients with intractable variceal bleeding from July 1985 to January 1989 at Kyungpook National University Hospital. The results obtained were as follows. the age of patients was ranged from 11-65 years old most frequent in 5th & 6th decade(77 %) Male to female ratio was 3.5:1. Successful bleeding control was obtained in 60 cases (90%) Esophageal varices were 33 cases (50%) gastroesophageal varices 20 cases(30%) and gastric varices 13 cases(20%) Procedure related deaths were 2 cases (3%) one with cerebral infarction the other with intraperitoneal hemorrhage. Postprocedure one year survival rate was 55%. Postprocedure one year rebleeding rate was 55%. PTVO should be considered as an effective treatment of bleeding gastroesophageal varices. surgical risk group it must be the treatment of choice.
