The operative and histopathological findings in 15 cases of intracranial meningioma after preoperative embolization with Gelfoam and/or polyvinyl alcohol foam are reported. The goal of preoperative embolization of meningiomas is to facilitate their surgical removel by reducing tumor vascularity and decreasing blood loss during surgery. The effect of embolization reduces blood loss during operation in almost all cases, especially with sole blood supply from external carotid artery. Better results can be obtained by advance in experience about appropriate selection of cases and embolic material, and superselection technique.
