한국산 애반딧불 (Luciola lateralis Motschulsky)의 보호에 관한 연구로서, 분류학적 특징을 기재하고 서식환경 및 생활사를 확인하기 위하여 실내외 연구를 병행하였다. 애반딧불은 완전변태를 하며 흑색의 유충은 7령 (령)까지의 령기를 거치는 동안 하천의 다슬기, 고동 등을 섭식한다. 번데기 기간은 10일 정도이고, 성충의 체장은 수컷 10~13mm, 암컷 13~16mm 이다. 암컷은 개체 당 300~500개의 담황색 알을 산란한다. 성충의 몸은 흑색이고, 머리는 앞가슴 쪽으로 돌출되어있다. 앞가슴은 홍색이며, 중앙에 흑색의 종반이 있는 점이 본 종의 주요 특징이다. 고안된 사육시설로 대량증식의 가능성을 확인하였다.
As studies on the propagation of Korean fireflies, Luciola lateralis, the taxonomic characteristics were described and the indoor and outdoor observations were performed to confirm the ecological life cycle. Fireflies were holometabolic, and ingested marsh snails while larvae. A pupal stage lasted about 10 days. The adult body lengthes of females were 13~16 mm, and those of males were 10~13 mm. Females spawned about 300~500 eggs. The body of an adult firefly was black and the head protruded from the front of the prothorax. The characteristics of this species were that the prothorax is reddish and that there are longitudinal puncta at its center. The possibility was confirmed of a propagation of fireflies in large numbers in the designed cages.
