Computed tomographic findings were analyzed in 47 patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the hypopharynx in terms of site of origin, patterns of extent, spread of primary tumor, and regional 1ymph node metastais. CT staging of the primary tumor(T) and regional 1ymph node metastasis(N) were obtained and compared with the clinical T and N classification. The results were as follows: 1. CT provided more valuable information than clinical examination in evaluation of submucous tumor extension, bony and cartilaginous invasion, and deep cervical 1ymph node. 2. In comparison with the clinical staging, CT led to upstaging of the primary tumor staging(T) by 15%. 3.CT upgraded regional 1ymph node metastasis of 21% compared with the clinical staging.
