In order to investigate the effect of mercerization in continuous process, the iodine adsorption ability and physical properties of the cotton fabric were studied. The cellulose samples were dewaxed by soxhlet extraction with ethyl alcohol for 24 hours and treated with NaOH solution. The iodine adsorption was carried out in l2- Kl solution and iodine desorption in Na2SO4 solution. The crease recovery angle, breaking strength and elongation of the fibers were measured. The Crystallinity measured from iodine sorption value(ISV) was compared with that of x-ray diffraction method. The quantity of iodine adsorption calculated as milligrams of iodine per gram of dry cellulose(iodine sorption value, ISV) by titration with sodium thiosulfate solution. The crtstallinity was calculated from ISV assuming that soluble methocel is completely amorphous. The ISV of mercerized fiber increased with the increase of NaOH concentration at the concentration was expressed as follows :
