Bracing elements are being widely used in the construction of steel frame structures due to their ability to increase the lateral rigidity. However, the hysteresis behavior of the bracing members is quite complex because of buckling combined with yielding. This makes response computation of a braced frame more complex than that of an unbraced frame. For this reason, this study presents a procedure for modeling these axial members for use in computer-aided dynamic analyses when large inelastic cyclic deflections are anticipated. In order to include the effects of compressive load capacities for bracing members with large slenderness ratio, a mathematical model has been proposed. This mathematical model is used in computing the responses of one and two story braced steel frames subjected to artificially simulated earthquake loading, and the ductility factors are calculated.
