Each ovary of Forficula auricularia consists of 34 ovarioles in a comb-like fashion. These ovarioles form three linear rows and each ovariole inserts to a lateral oviduct. All of the ovarioles deposited in each ovary are developed almost synchronously. In the germarium, three oocyte-nurse cell complexes are formed. Each complex composed of an oocyte and a nurse cell is connected by the intercellnlar bridge. The ultrastructure of the intercellular bridge is shown typical configuration as other polytrophic meroistic insects. The vitellarium usually composed of three developing egg chambers which shows gradient of maturation. Feulgen stain shows high polyploidization of DNA of the nurse cell in the egg chamber for supporting the developing oocyte, and some cytoplasmic organelles are transported to the oocyte through the intercellular bridges. It is certain that the mitotic number of cystoblast of Forficula auricularia is limited to only once, so it has the lowest number of nurse cell in all insects. In the ovary of this insect, any mitotic divisions of germ cells were never found in the adult insects even though some remanent germ cells remain at anterior part of the germarium.
