Several satellites have been successfully developed and launched since 1990 in Korea. Satellite programs such as KITSAT, KOMPSAT and KOREASAT for implementing their various missions are on going. Through the satellite programs, Korea have achieved the key technologies of satellite communications, i.e., satellite communication earth station technology, satellite network design technology, satellite transponder technology, satellite mission control technology, satellite transmission technology for HDTV, active antenna system technology for DBS, and so on. This paper outlines satellite development history, present status of those satellite programs and achievements of R&D in Korea. Finally, preliminary mid & long-term plan and perspective of satellite development are also presented.
