To identify new cry1-type crystal protein genes, 52 Bacillus thuringiensis isolates which produced bipyramidal shaped crystal inclusions were selected. PCR-RFLP analysis of 52 Bt isolates revealed 6 distinct patterns, and 6 standard isolates were selected from each RFLP group. Through cloning and restriction enzyme analysis of the PCR- amplified fragments showing unique RFLP pattern, 6 novel cry1-type genes were identified and named cry1-201, cry1-202, cry1-203, cry1-205, cry1-206 and cry1-207, respectively. In the nucleotide sequence analysis of these novel crystal genes, cry1-201, cry1-202 and cry1-203 showed 93.7%, 94.5% and 66.7% of maximum similarities with cry1Ac gene, respectively. Also, cry1-205 and cry1-207 showed 99.5% and 99.4% maximum similarities with cry1Be gene, and cry1-206 showed 97.5% maximum similarity with cry1Ab gene.
