Purpose : The purpose of this study was to project 12 kinds of Advanced Practice Nurses(APN) in Korea. Methods: Need model. ratio model and expert opinion were used for projecting the number of APNs. Results: 1) In 2002, there are 8.325 registered Advanced Practice Nurses in Korea. This represents 5.5% of total available nurses and 18 APNs per 100, 000 population. 2) The number of APNs needed to meet the demands in 2002. 2005 and 2020 was estimated at minimum of 15, 038 to maximum 33, 752. 15.927 to 36.570 and 25.082 to 47.847, respectively. The projected number of advanced practice nurses for the year 2002 was 9.9~22.3% of total available nurses in Korea, and 32~71 APNs per 100.000 population. Conclusion : In order to match the supply to the need, the professional organizations should direct their effort toward enacting legislation. Education systems should identify strategies in initiating advanced practice nursing programs in masters level as well as standardizing curriculums across the programs.
